US president Joe Biden will pledge to crack down on xenophobia against Asian-Americans in the wake of an increase in violence and harassment during the pandemic fuelled by Donald Trump’s frequent references to the “China virus”.
1. crack down on — 严厉打击
Joe Biden will pledge to crack down on xenophobia against Asian-Americans”
为什么好: crack down on 比 stop 生动得多。
The government should stop pollution.
The government should crack down on environmental pollution.
Schools are cracking down on mobile phone use during class.
2. fan the flames of — 火上浇油
Mr Trump came under intense fire for using rhetoric that fanned the flames of racism towards Asian Americans”
His words made the situation worse.
His remarks fanned the flames of social division.
fan the flames of
The policy only fanned the flames of public discontent.
3. come under intense fire —
Former president Trump came under intense fire last year for using rhetoric about the Covid-19 virus”
比 be criticized by 有画面感得多。
Many people criticized the company for its policy.
The company came under intense fire for its controversial policy.
The minister came under heavy fire for his handling of the economic crisis.
4. spark outrage —
His comments sparked outrage among Asian-Americans”
The decision made many people angry.
The decision sparked outrage among environmentalists.
The video sparked public outrage over police brutality.
5. in the wake of — 在……
原文出处: “in the wake of an increase in violence and harassment during the pandemic”
After the economic crisis, many people lost their jobs.
In the wake of the economic crisis, millions of people lost their jobs.
in the wake of
In the wake of the natural disaster, the government declared a state of emergency.
