But... / However... / On the other hand...

Revenue more than tripled to 958m last year… That explosive growth has continued in 2021. Revenue already topped 522m in the first quarter. A viral meme-stock and cryptocurrency trading boom helped the platform to more than double the number of funded accounts over the past 12 months to 18m.
|---|---|
| Robinhood grew very fast in 2020. | Revenue more than tripled to 958m in 2020. |
| More people use the app now. | The number of funded accounts more than doubled to 18m. |
| The company is profitable but not very. | Charles Schwab made 3.3bn in profit last year, against Robinhood’s 7m. |
公式: 倍数词(more than doubled / tripled / quadrupled) + 具体数字(to Xm / to Y million)
Technology changed our lives a lot”,写”Smartphone usage more than tripled to 3.8 billion users over the past decade.”
But the filing also highlights just how vulnerable Robinhood’s business model is to regulatory scrutiny.
Revenue more than tripled last year → But the model is vulnerable
40bn valuation → vs. Charles Schwab trades on just 12 times earnings
Add to this Robinhood’s meagre profitability and the 40bn valuation the company is seeking looks steep.
Assuming the app can double its revenue this year, that still implies a valuation of 20 times that.
Charles Schwab, which made 3.3bn in profit last year against Robinhood’s 7m, trades on a ratio of just 12 times.
- Add to this [A] and [B] looks steep →
- Assuming…that still implies… →
- [Company X], which…against [Company Y] →
Add to this the lack of face-to-face interaction and the efficiency of online learning looks questionable.
Assuming students can stay focused throughout a 40-minute online class, that still implies a significant gap compared to in-person discussion.
Traditional classrooms, where teachers can instantly read students’ facial expressions against a computer screen, create a feedback loop that online platforms struggle to match.
技巧三:用”if…then…”
FT Lex
If the stock tanks on opening day…it also risks further public outcry from an army of unhappy buyers.
Any changes could deal a big blow to Robinhood’s business model.
As it does not charge clients a fee on making stock trades, the company makes the bulk of its revenue from payment-for-order flows.
These accounted for about 63 per cent of Robinhood’s first quarter revenue.
- Claim (Any changes could deal a big blow)
- Reason (because the company…)
- Evidence (63 per cent of revenue)
Any changes to the current exam system could deal a big blow to students’ learning habits.
As many students rely on standardised tests as their only motivation, a sudden shift might leave them without a clear direction.
Exams account for over 80 per cent of high school students’ primary study goals, according to a recent survey.
|---|---|---|
| 数据对比 | more than doubled/tripled to [number] | 描述变化、增长、差距 |
| 反向对比 | Add to this [A] and [B] looks [adj] / ...against...
| 假设对比 | If...then... / Any [change] could [effect] | 分析利弊、预测后果 |
