① set off → spark / trigger / ignite

A jury has convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of murdering George Floyd, whose death last year set off worldwide protests against racial injustice.

set off 本义是”触发”(如 set off a bomb),引申为”引发(一连串事件)“。

The policy caused widespread discussion among students.

The policy sparked widespread debate among students.

💡 效果 spark(火花点燃)比 cause(引起)多了一层”爆发”的动态感。trigger(扣动扳机)则暗示因果链条紧密。ignite(点燃)语气最强,适合描述激烈反响。

  • The report triggered a wave of criticism from environmental groups.
  • His remarks ignited a heated debate on social media.

② carry a sentence → carry a maximum penalty / be punishable by

The second-degree murder count, the most serious of the three, carries a prison sentence of up to 40 years.

If you break the law, you can be put in prison for a long time.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

③ furrow one’s brow → knit one’s brows / a slight frown

Wearing a light grey suit, a blue tie and a mask, he furrowed his brow only slightly when the verdict was read.

He looked very nervous when he heard the news.

He furrowed his brow as the announcement was made.

  • She knitted her brows in confusion.
  • A slight frown crossed his face as he read the letter.

④ hand down → deliver / announce / pronounce

Floyd’s family responded to the conviction at a press conference shortly after the verdict was handed down.

The result was announced by the committee last week.

The committee handed down its decision last week.

⑤ barricaded with → fortified with / cordoned off with

The government centre has been barricaded with a fence topped with concertina wire since March.

barricade(设路障)比 blockclose 更具防御性画面。a fence topped with concertina wire(顶上带刺铁丝的围栏)更是绝好的视觉细节。

The building was blocked with fences.

The area was cordoned off and barricaded with metal barriers.

  2. 都可以跨场景迁移——spark a debate 可用于教育政策、hand down a decision 可用于公司董事会、furrow one’s brow 可用于任何人物描写。
