表达”批评”用 criticize,表达”争取支持”用 ask for support,表达”引起反对”用 make people disagree

Joe Biden will take a swipe at Wall Street in his first speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night, as he tries to build support among Americans for his multitrillion-dollar economic agenda.

Biden will make a strong pitch for his 2.3tn infrastructure spending bill, which he wants to be funded with higher corporate taxes that have elicited a backlash from business.

1. take a swipe at — 抨击/挖苦

Joe Biden will take a swipe at Wall Street”

take a swipe at

The candidate criticized his opponent’s economic plan.

The candidate took a swipe at his opponent’s economic plan during the debate.

In his speech, the CEO took a swipe at the new regulations.

2. make a (strong) pitch for — 大力争取/推销

Biden will make a strong pitch for his 2.3tn infrastructure spending bill”

make a pitch fortry to get support for

The government tried to get public support for the new policy.

The government made a strong pitch for the new policy.

She made a compelling pitch for increasing investment in renewable energy.

3. elicit a backlash —

原文出处: “higher corporate taxes that have elicited a backlash from business”

The policy caused many people to disagree.

The policy elicited a backlash from small business owners.

💡 效果 elicit a backlash 用两个词表达了”引发了一波强烈的反对浪潮”,比啰嗦的 caused many people to disagree 专业得多。

The company’s decision to cut benefits elicited a backlash from employees.

4. tout —

Biden’s speech is also expected to tout the passage of his 1.9tn fiscal stimulus package”

The president talked about the success of his economic plan.

The president touted the success of his economic plan.

The company touted its new product as a breakthrough in green technology.

5. turn peril into possibility —

Turning peril into possibility. Crisis into opportunity. Setback into strength.”

turning A into B

The country turned a difficult situation into a good one.

The country succeeded in turning crisis into opportunity during the economic downturn.

The company turned a public relations disaster into an opportunity to rebuild trust. / True leaders turn setbacks into strength.
