多数人只会写 more and more difficult,一句话重复三遍。

The Japanese government is under pressure to reverse course and hold the Tokyo Olympics behind closed doors as Covid-19 cases rise in the capital.

After bottoming out at fewer than 400 cases a day in mid-June, the number of new diagnoses has climbed to almost 600 a day, raising fears of a full-blown surge when the games are held between July 23 and August 8.

The organisers of Tokyo 2020 said they have delayed a ticket lottery until Saturday as the debate on spectators comes to a head.

Separately, Shinzo Abe, former prime minister, attacked those who support cancelling the Olympics as “anti-Japanese”. He singled out the Communist party and the centre-left Asahi newspaper.

1. reverse course —

The Japanese government is under pressure to reverse course and hold the Tokyo Olympics behind closed doors

The government changed its mind about the plan.

The government was under pressure to reverse course on the reopening plan.

The school reversed course on the uniform policy after students protested.

After bottoming out at fewer than 400 cases a day in mid-June…

The number of cases was lowest in June.

Daily cases bottomed out at fewer than 400 in mid-June before climbing again.

The company’s sales bottomed out in March and have recovered since.

3. full-blown —

原文出处:raising fears of a full-blown surge when the games are held

People worried about a big increase in cases.

The rise in cases raised fears of a full-blown crisis.

Without timely correction, small grammar errors can become a full-blown writing problem.

4. come to a head —

原文出处:the debate on spectators comes to a head

学生写”争论很激烈”只会 the debate was very fierce;come to a head 强调的是”到了不得不解决的临界点”,叙事张力完全不同。

The debate became very intense.

The debate over the policy came to a head this week.

The disagreement between parents and children about screen time came to a head during the holiday.

He singled out the Communist party and the centre-left Asahi newspaper

学生写”他批评了某些人”会说 he criticized some people——模糊且无力。

He criticized some newspapers.

He singled out the local media for their unfair coverage.

💡 效果 single out for / single out as 结构清晰,把”批评对象”和”批评原因”一次说清,比笼统的 criticize 高级得多。

例句:The teacher singled out my conclusion for special praise.

写”决策类”或”社会争议类”作文时,别急着下结论,先按这个顺序组织:压力(under pressure to)→ 恶化(bottom out / climb)→ 顶点(come to a head)→ 冲突(single out)。
