I was very angry、I was very happy、I was very tired——全是”I was + 形容词”的流水账,阅卷老师看三篇就腻了。
English:
Last week, my brother-in-law — who suffers from heart disease and high blood pressure — was having a rant at the breakfast table about “the collapse of civilisation” (his words). My sister, seeing his face redden and eyes bulge as he became increasingly animated, began to worry seriously that he could be about to give himself a heart attack.
Ranting might have negative connotations, bringing to mind old bores launching into tedious diatribes, but perhaps we are too down on it. If it can bring physical and mental health benefits, maybe we should all indulge a little more — now, in the midst of a global pandemic, more than ever?
The sense of liberation that comes from really letting loose is perhaps what makes ranting feel pleasurable.
Since the rantee often finds it hard to get a word in edgeways, the social component might not seem very important (and indeed sometimes feels almost non-existent).
For those who live and work alone, the opportunities for ranting are few and far between in this year of lockdowns.
1. have a rant ——
原文出处: “was having a rant at the breakfast table about ‘the collapse of civilisation’”
My father was very angry and shouted at me.
My father had a rant about my grades at the dinner table.
2. face redden and eyes bulge ——
原文出处: “seeing his face redden and eyes bulge as he became increasingly animated”
He was very angry.
His face reddened and his eyes bulged as the argument went on.
3. let loose ——
The sense of liberation that comes from really letting loose”
We need to relax and release our pressure.
After months of exam preparation, the students finally let loose on the sports field.
4. get a word in edgeways ——
原文出处: “the rantee often finds it hard to get a word in edgeways”
The teacher talked so much that we could not speak.
My grandmother talks so fast that nobody can get a word in edgeways.
5. few and far between —— 少之又少
原文出处: “the opportunities for ranting are few and far between”
There are very few chances to practise English.
Chances to speak with native speakers are few and far between.
这5个表达连起来就是一条完整的情绪描写链:先写身体反应(face redden and eyes bulge)→ 再写爆发动作(have a rant)→ 写释放感(let loose)→ 写倾诉场景中的插不上嘴(get a word in edgeways)→ 最后感叹机会稀缺(few and far between)。
写记叙文时,别再用 I was very angry 开头。 这就是 show, don’t tell。
