The book is very good. It is very popular. Many people like it. Now…

English:

Attacked at the time as a wild overvaluation, the purchase has paid off royally.

Ms Frier recounts how Instagram’s founders grew increasingly disgruntled and ultimately quit Facebook, after their creation became entangled in “a corporate struggle over personality, pride and priorities”.

The FT review of No Filter described it as “a compelling tale of jealousy”, which also tracks the malign impact of an app that sets unattainable standards of beauty and lifestyle, fuelled by “alarming behavioural incentives”.

It has since taken on new relevance as technology companies have reported increased revenues and antitrust authorities have subjected Big Tech to tighter scrutiny.

1. pay off royally ——

Attacked at the time as a wild overvaluation, the purchase has paid off royally.”

Facebook bought Instagram in 2012. People said the price was too high. But the deal was very successful. (Attacked at the time as…),主句只留结果——pay off 是「有了回报」,royally(像国王那样地)把回报的份量一次加满。 Attacked / Dismissed / Written off at the time as + 负面评价, [主语] has paid off royally.

Facebook bought Instagram in 2012. People said the price was too high. But the deal was very successful.

Attacked at the time as a wild overvaluation, the purchase has paid off royally.

「very successful」是给结论,「has paid off royally」是把当年与今天摆在同一句里对照。 Dismissed at the time as a waste of money, the programme has paid off royally.

2. grow increasingly disgruntled → ultimately quit ——

Ms Frier recounts how Instagram’s founders grew increasingly disgruntled and ultimately quit Facebook.”

The founders were not happy. In the end, they left the company.

The founders were not happy. In the end, they left the company.

The founders grew increasingly disgruntled and ultimately quit the company they had created.

3. a compelling tale of X / track the malign impact of —— 评价作品,不能只会 good

The FT review of No Filter described it as a compelling tale of jealousy, which also tracks the malign impact of an app that sets unattainable standards of beauty and lifestyle.”

The book is very good and it tells a story about jealousy. It shows the app is bad for people. FT 的评论是三步走:先定调(a compelling tale of jealousy——一句话给出作品的题材和气质),再用 which 从句说内容(tracks the malign impact of…——跟踪、记录某事物的有害影响,比 shows 精确得多),最后用一个 that 从句落到具体(sets unattainable standards of beauty——设置了无法企及的标准,替读者把「哪里有害」说清楚)。

The book is very good. It tells a story about jealousy and shows that this app is bad for people.

The FT described the book as a compelling tale of jealousy, which also tracks the malign impact of an app that sets unattainable standards of beauty.

写短视频、写选秀、写消费主义:a compelling tale of ambition, which also tracks the malign impact of a platform that sets unattainable standards of success.

4. take on new relevance ——

It has since taken on new relevance as technology companies have reported increased revenues.”

Because of the pandemic, this book became more important.

Because of the pandemic, this book became more important to readers.

The book has taken on new relevance as more people live and shop online.

The debate has taken on new relevance as AI writes more of what students read.

5. subject A to tighter scrutiny —— 「

原文出处: “antitrust authorities have subjected Big Tech to tighter scrutiny.”

The government is checking these big companies more carefully now. subject A to B 是英语里表达「使A遭受B」的标准动词短语:B 换成 scrutiny(审查)、pressure(压力)、criticism(批评)、cuts(削减),句子立刻进入正式语域。注意两个细节:scrutiny 前加比较级 tighter(更严的),说明监管在收紧;主语是 authorities(主管部门),责任主体明确。被动形式同样好用:be subjected to tighter scrutiny。

The government is checking these big companies more carefully now.

Antitrust authorities have subjected Big Tech to tighter scrutiny.

Regulators have subjected livestreaming platforms to tighter scrutiny.

Attacked at the time as… 把当年的质疑摆出来,再用 has paid off royally 给结果,用 grew increasingly disgruntled and ultimately quit 写人的反应,用 a compelling tale of…, which also tracks the malign impact of… 给作品/现象做判断,最后用 has taken on new relevance 与 subject… to tighter scrutiny 把话题接到当下。

Dismissed at the time as a wild overvaluation, the purchase has paid off royally. The founders, however, grew increasingly disgruntled and ultimately quit the company they had built. The book that tells their story is a compelling tale of ambition, which also tracks the malign impact of an app that sets unattainable standards of success. It has since taken on new relevance as regulators have subjected Big Tech to tighter scrutiny.

另外三个「配角」表达,写书评、奖项、竞赛类题目时特别占优势:a deeply sourced inside story of X(材料扎实的内幕故事,形容一本书/一部纪录片)、a wild overvaluation(出价高得离谱,写「被高估」)、make the final shortlist(进入最终入围名单,写竞赛/评选)。

More than 400 entries were submitted, and only six titles made the final shortlist.
