“Recently, more and more restaurants are in trouble.” “With the development of society, life is changing.”
A few short months ago, the lunch rush at Just Salad in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighbourhood was a mob scene. On any given weekday around noon, throngs of office workers would peel themselves away from their spreadsheets, grab their brightly coloured reusable plastic bowls and trudge over to the restaurant to join a queue that snaked around the concrete floor and spilled out on to the street.
Last Friday, however, it was completely devoid of customers.
Sweetgreen, a salad chain valued at 1.6bn last year, saw its revenue drop by nearly 70 per cent at the height of the pandemic, according to chief executive Jonathan Neman. “When the world went on shutdown, our sales took a massive nosedive right away,” he said.
[时间锚点2], however, it was [冷清/相反场景].
Recently, the restaurant is not very busy. Many people do not come.
A few years ago, the school library was packed with students during every break. Last semester, however, it was almost completely empty.
A few years ago 和 Last semester 是时间锚点,however 是转折信号——三个词撑起一个结构。
A decade ago, the old street was crowded with vendors every morning. Last month, however, it was almost completely silent.
结构公式: While [整体] fell by [数字A], [细分] were down by [数字B]
Many restaurants lost a lot of money during the pandemic.
While US restaurants as a whole saw their sales fall by around 24 per cent last year, salad chains were down by 69 per cent.
While ... as a whole ...
While the overall book market grew by 5 per cent last year, independent bookshops saw their sales fall by a third.
FT先给数字(营收跌70%),再补一个身份(首席执行官),最后用一句引语把损失变成画面:our sales took a massive nosedive right away。
The company had a very bad time last year.
“When the pandemic hit, our sales took a massive nosedive right away,” said the chief executive.
“When the new rules came into effect, our membership numbers took a sharp nosedive,” said the gym manager.
