另一种是堆形容词——It is very big and very surprising.

English:

Australian house prices rose 3 per cent last year, defying economists’ dire forecasts that housing could lose up to a fifth of its value because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Analysts credited ultra-low interest rates, government stimulus and the government’s adept handling of Covid-19 for boosting confidence in the housing sector.

As the virus spread across Australia in March and April, residential property sales fell 40 per cent, causing prices to dip 2.1 per cent by September.

But a surge in buying activity in the fourth quarter bolstered a rebound, particularly outside Australia’s eight largest cities, with regional home values rising 6.9 per cent in the 12 months to end December.

“Record-low interest rates played a key role in supporting housing market activity, along with a spectacular rise in consumer confidence as Covid-related restrictions were lifted and forecasts for economic conditions turned out to be overly pessimistic,” said Tim Lawless, Corelogic research director.

1. defy forecasts ——

Australian house prices rose 3 per cent last year, defying economists’ dire forecasts that housing could lose up to a fifth of its value”

The prices went up 3 per cent. This was different from what experts said before.

Prices rose 3 per cent last year, defying analysts’ dire forecasts of a sharp fall.

2. credit A for B —— 把 B 归功于 A

Analysts credited ultra-low interest rates, government stimulus and the government’s adept handling of Covid-19 for boosting confidence in the housing sector.”

为什么好: credit sb/sth for sth 是“认为…… 学生写原因只会 because of、thanks to,主语永远是“结果”;用 credit A for B,主语换成“分析人士”,责任与功劳归属表达得清清楚楚。

The house prices went up because of the low interest rate. The government also did a good job.

Analysts credited low interest rates and the government’s handling of the crisis for boosting buyer confidence.

原文出处: “residential property sales fell 40 per cent, causing prices to dip 2.1 per cent by September.”

为什么好: 学生写“涨跌”只有 go up、go down、increase、decrease,全部是同一个力度。

The price went down a little and then it went up again.

Prices dipped 2.1 per cent by September before rebounding in the final quarter.

4. bolster a rebound ——

原文出处: “a surge in buying activity in the fourth quarter bolstered a rebound”

Many people bought houses, so the price went up again.

A surge in demand for larger homes bolstered the rebound in regional prices.

5. turn out to be overly pessimistic —— (预测)被证明过于悲观

原文出处: “forecasts for economic conditions turned out to be overly pessimistic”

People thought the situation would be very bad, but it was not so bad.

Early forecasts for the industry turned out to be overly pessimistic.

这5个表达连起来是一条**“数据反差链”**:先用 defy forecasts 抛出“结果和预期相反”的钩子,用 credit A for B 交代原因,用 dip 精确写中途的幅度,用 a surge … bolstered a rebound 写翻转,最后用 turn out to be overly pessimistic 做一句事后评估。

Sales dipped slightly in the first half of the year before a surge in online orders bolstered a rebound in the final quarter. Analysts credited the recovery to lower prices and faster delivery, and most early forecasts for the sector turned out to be overly pessimistic.
