I believe that…”

Trump’s big flaw: terrible hiring(FT №7):

Seen in this light, the suspicion that Mr Trump was a budding autocrat was always off-base. An autocrat is not just a solipsistic ruler. An autocrat makes the government’s instruments of force — police, soldiers, spies — resonate to his will. Mr Trump never even figured what his agents did or which ones he could trust. There were many reasons to worry about Mr Trump. Autocracy was not one of them.

Populist movements face a Catch-22. They take power arguing that a governing class or even a “deep state”, insulated from the democratic will of the people, has grown snobby, opaque and self-serving. Populists are sometimes right about the corruption of technocracies. Political theorists since Max Weber have understood that. But even an anti-technocratic movement, once in power, needs enough technocratic knowhow to run the government and locate the abuses it has been complaining about.

American general Dwight Eisenhower, Italian mogul Silvio Berlusconi and Istanbul mayor Recep Tayyip Erdogan all managed the transition to head of government better than Mr Trump.

(Concede-then-Refute)

Some people think Trump is an autocrat. But I don’t think so.

The suspicion that Mr Trump was a budding autocrat was always off-base. An autocrat makes the government’s instruments of force resonate to his will. Mr Trump never even figured what his agents did or which ones he could trust.

💡 效果 升级版做了三件事:① 明确写出被反驳的观点(“the suspicion that…”)② 给出你自己的定义标准(“An autocrat is not just…An autocrat makes…”)③ 把事实放在标准下检验(“Mr Trump never even figured…”)。

The view that [common belief] is [your judgment]. [Your definition/framework]. [Evidence showing the belief doesn’t hold].

(Paradox/Catch-22)

[Group/System] faces a [paradox/Catch-22]. They [do/believe one thing]. But [the opposite is also true]. [Explain the tension].

Education systems face a Catch-22. They aim to teach students critical thinking through standardised exams. But standardised exams, by their nature, reward conformity, not curiosity.

(Comparative Evidence)

3] all [achieved X]. But [your subject] [failed to do so].

[Person A], [Person B] and [Person C] all managed to [achieve something]. But [Person D] [failed].
