The problem is serious. It has lasted for a long time. Many people worry about it.

For a powerful leader, there are few adjectives more deadening than “outgoing”. Not in the sense of being extrovert or party-loving, but meaning “soon to depart”, heading for the door — over, but not yet out.
Defeated or departing presidents have to endure an extended spell in purgatory — nearly 80 days in Mr Trump’s case — from election day to the inauguration of their successors.
The market for influence — a little like the stock market over the past week — adjusts swiftly to new realities.
To rub it in, senior ex-bankers — even Ben Bernanke, once the all-powerful Fed chairman — were handed name tags giving their position as “Former Policymaker”.
While advice abounds in the “how to lead” section of the business bookshop about how chief executives should handle their first 100 days, the “how to leave” shelves are largely bare, apart from the obvious (but still frequently ignored) imperative to make a succession plan.
结构一:破折号插入语·量化补注——“an extended spell in purgatory — nearly 80 days in Mr Trump’s case —”
Defeated or departing presidents have to endure an extended spell in purgatory — nearly 80 days in Mr Trump’s case — from election day to the inauguration of their successors.
为什么好: 主句只说”要熬一段”,插入语立刻把”一段”量化为 nearly 80 days in Mr Trump’s case(以特朗普为例,近80天),后面再用 from election day to the inauguration 交代时间轴。
Presidents have to wait a very long time. For Mr Trump, it is nearly 80 days. They wait from election day to the inauguration.
Presidents endure an extended spell in purgatory — nearly 80 days in Mr Trump’s case — from election day to the inauguration of their successors.
公式里的 in X’s case 特别好用:先给普遍现象,再用 in China’s case / in Xiamen’s case 落到个案。 The figure has risen sharply — nearly 12 per cent in Xiamen’s case — over the past five years.
The market for influence — a little like the stock market over the past week —”
The market for influence — a little like the stock market over the past week — adjusts swiftly to new realities.
插入语给了一个人人熟悉的类比:a little like the stock market over the past week(有点像过去一周的股市)。 The market for influence adjusts swiftly to new realities
Influence is like a market. It changes quickly when things change.
The market for influence — a little like the stock market over the past week — adjusts swiftly to new realities.
The power of the internet — a little like a magnifying glass — makes small mistakes look huge.
模板: [抽象主语] — a little like / much like + [熟悉事物] — [谓语 + 宾语]
结构三:破折号插入语·反讽加码(插入语里再套同位语)——“even Ben Bernanke, once the all-powerful Fed chairman”
To rub it in, senior ex-bankers — even Ben Bernanke, once the all-powerful Fed chairman — were handed name tags giving their position as “Former Policymaker”.
- even + 人名——“连……都”,把讽刺拉满;
- once the all-powerful Fed chairman——同位语交代他曾经的身份(曾经大权在握的美联储主席);
- 主句的 were handed name tags giving their position as “Former Policymaker”——现在的身份只剩一个标签。
Even Ben Bernanke had to wear a name tag. He was a very powerful Fed chairman before. Now he is just a former policymaker.
senior ex-bankers — even Ben Bernanke, once the all-powerful Fed chairman — were handed name tags giving their position as “Former Policymaker”.
Even our head teacher, once the strictest woman in school, laughed.
…the “how to leave” shelves are largely bare, apart from the obvious (but still frequently ignored) imperative to make a succession plan.
…heading for the door — over, but not yet out.
Everyone knows this, but people often ignore it.
- 短促节拍:— over, but not yet out 用两个词组给 “outgoing” 下定义,像鼓点一样收住整段。
Everyone knows they should make a succession plan, but people often ignore it. An outgoing leader means the leader is over but not yet out.
…apart from the obvious (but still frequently ignored) imperative to make a succession plan.
只出现一个破折号,通常是句末补充或总括(如 — over, but not yet out)。
同位语(even Ben Bernanke, once the all-powerful Fed chairman)、类比(a little like the stock market)、被动说明都可以放在两个破折号之间。
-
Our class has raised money for the school library. Our class has raised money for the school library — nearly 3,000 yuan in two weeks in our case.
-
Learning grammar is boring. Learning grammar — a little like doing push-ups — is boring but useful.
-
Many famous writers were rejected at first. J.K. Rowling received twelve rejection letters. Many famous writers were rejected at first — even J.K. Rowling, once a single mother writing in Edinburgh cafés — before they were published.
