Some experts say it is bad. A professor said the problem is serious.
Peter Ward is an expert. He works at the University of Vienna. He is based in Seoul. He studies North Korea.
FT №166 — Kim Jong Un warns of food shortages in North Korea(Edward White、Kang Buseong 首尔报道,2021年6月)
Statistics on the secretive state are difficult to obtain and often unreliable. However, Peter Ward, a Seoul-based expert with the University of Vienna who tracks the North Korean economy, pointed to reports of “unprecedented” price increases for staples such as corn and rice in recent weeks.
While shipments — believed to be imports of food, fertiliser and fuel — from China, the country’s main trading partner, have continued at a much-reduced pace, most cross-border trading activity has declined sharply or stopped completely.
Rachel Lee, a former US government North Korea analyst who is now with 38 North at the Stimson Center, a Washington think-tank, said Kim might also be acknowledging food shortages to “crack the whip on the farming sector to increase production” as well as justify self-reliance.
结构一:复合前置修饰语 + 机构 + 研究领域——“a Seoul-based expert with the University of Vienna who tracks the North Korean economy”
However, Peter Ward, a Seoul-based expert with the University of Vienna who tracks the North Korean economy, pointed to reports of “unprecedented” price increases…
- a Seoul-based expert:用连字符把”驻地”变成形容词,比 who is based in Seoul 少四个词;
- with the University of Vienna:介词 with 引出机构(比 of 更常用于”任职于”);
- who tracks the North Korean economy:who
Peter Ward is an expert. He is from the University of Vienna. He is based in Seoul. He studies North Korea. He pointed out the price increase.
Peter Ward, a Seoul-based expert with the University of Vienna who tracks the North Korean economy, pointed to reports of “unprecedented” price increases.
写”我认识的一位在厦门教了二十年书的老师”:a Xiamen-based teacher with 20 years of experience who has taught thousands of students.
模板: [人名], a [地点]-based [职称] with [机构] who [动词 + 领域], [主句谓语]
结构二:前职 + 现任(双层同位语)——“a former US government North Korea analyst who is now with 38 North at the Stimson Center, a Washington think-tank”
Rachel Lee, a former US government North Korea analyst who is now with 38 North at the Stimson Center, a Washington think-tank, said Kim might also be acknowledging food shortages…
- 第一层 a former US government North Korea analyst——过去的身份(曾在美国政府分析朝鲜问题);
- 第二层 who is now with 38 North at the Stimson Center——现在的机构,而且机构名叠了两层(38 North 隶属于 Stimson Center);
Rachel Lee used to work for the US government. Now she works for 38 North. 38 North is part of the Stimson Center. The Stimson Center is a think-tank in Washington. She said Kim might be doing this to increase production.
Rachel Lee, a former US government North Korea analyst who is now with 38 North at the Stimson Center, a Washington think-tank, said Kim might also be acknowledging food shortages to “crack the whip on the farming sector”.
要用两个句子,英文用 a former X who is now with Y 就把它缝进一个同位语。 Ms Lin, a former newspaper editor who is now our writing teacher, said…
模板: [人名], a former [前职] who is now with [现机构], a [城市] [机构类型], said…
结构三:国家与机构的「职能标签」同位语——“from China, the country’s main trading partner,”
While shipments … from China, the country’s main trading partner, have continued at a much-reduced pace…
- the country’s 用所有格回指前文的主语 North Korea,不用重复国名;
(China is very important to North Korea),所以能当作名词的附件。
The goods came from China. China is North Korea’s main trading partner. The trade has slowed down.
Shipments from China, the country’s main trading partner, have continued at a much-reduced pace.
Xiamen, the city where I grew up、our school’s sister school in Japan。
结构四:破折号里的被动说明——“shipments — believed to be imports of food, fertiliser and fuel —”
While shipments — believed to be imports of food, fertiliser and fuel — from China, the country’s main trading partner, have continued at a much-reduced pace…
这是学术写作里 It is believed that…
It is said by people that…,其实一个插入语就够。
It is believed by people that the shipments include food, fertiliser and fuel. The shipments came from China.
Shipments — believed to be imports of food, fertiliser and fuel — from China have continued at a much-reduced pace.
💡 效果 同类公式:thought to be(据认为)、expected to reach(预计达到)、estimated at(估计为)。 The figure, estimated at 12 per cent, may double by 2030.
⚠️ 注意: believed to be 前面不加 it is;要加主语,句子就变成另一个结构了。
模板: [名词] — believed / thought to be [内容] — [主句谓语]
不认识——补一个同位语注释(a Washington think-tank / a Xiamen-based tutoring studio)。
❌ Dr Chen is a teacher at Xiamen No.1 Middle School. She has taught English for 18 years. She studies how students learn writing. She said most students only practise grammar, not writing.
升级提示:① 用 an Xiamen-based teacher with 18 years of experience 打前两层;② 用 who studies…
Dr Chen, an Xiamen-based teacher with 18 years of experience who studies how students learn writing, said most students only practise grammar, not writing.
再练一次:给你最喜欢的一位老师,用 a former [前职] who is now with [现学校] 写一句话。
