If there’s one thing that people across the political spectrum can agree on, it’s that they cannot stand a hypocrite.

In a recent poll by Ipsos Mori, 75 per cent of respondents said they were following the government’s coronavirus regulations all or nearly all of the time, but only 12 per cent believed the rest of the British public was doing so.

So why can’t we stand this characteristic in others? Daniel Effron, associate professor of organisational behaviour at the London Business School, says it’s because we resent people getting a “moral benefit” that they don’t deserve.

A drug addict who warns others not to take drugs is not seen as a hypocrite, though someone who publicly condemns drug-taking as morally abhorrent, say, and then is found to have been taking drugs themselves probably would be.

(So why…?)

So why can’t we stand this characteristic in others?

People hate hypocrites for many reasons.

So why can’t we stand this characteristic in others? Daniel Effron, associate professor at the London Business School, says it’s because we resent people getting a “moral benefit” that they don’t deserve.

So why [现象]? [专家], [身份], says it’s because [机制].

例句

So why do students procrastinate? A psychology professor at our school says it’s because we overestimate the pain of starting and underestimate the relief of finishing.

75 per cent of respondents said they were following the government’s coronavirus regulations all or nearly all of the time, but only 12 per cent believed the rest of the British public was doing so.

People always think they are better than others.

75 per cent of respondents said they were following the regulations, but only 12 per cent believed the rest of the public was doing so.

[N] per cent of [group A] said [X], but only [M] per cent believed [Y].

例句

80 per cent of students said they had finished their homework on time, but only 30 per cent believed their classmates had done the same.

手法三:专家引证法(associate professor…says it’s because)

Daniel Effron, associate professor of organisational behaviour at the London Business School, says it’s because we resent people getting a “moral benefit” that they don’t deserve.

Experts say people hate hypocrites.

Daniel Effron, associate professor of organisational behaviour at the London Business School, says it’s because we resent people getting a “moral benefit” that they don’t deserve.

[Name], [身份], says it’s because [具体机制].

例句

Professor Li, a specialist in educational psychology at our university, says it’s because students fear the shame of trying and failing in public.

(A is not…though B would be)

A drug addict who warns others not to take drugs is not seen as a hypocrite, though someone who publicly condemns drug-taking as morally abhorrent, say, and then is found to have been taking drugs themselves probably would be.

A hypocrite is someone who says one thing and does another.

A drug addict who warns others not to take drugs is not seen as a hypocrite, though someone who publicly condemns drug-taking as morally abhorrent and then is found to have been taking drugs themselves probably would be.

“not…though…”

[A who does X] is not seen as [Y], though [B who condemns X] probably would be.

例句

A student who quietly struggles with maths is not seen as lazy, though someone who publicly mocks others for being weak at maths and then refuses to do homework probably would be.
