I think it is unfair.
Scarlett Johansson has sued Disney, accusing the Marvel owner of breaching her contract by releasing the Black Widow film in cinemas and on its streaming service on the same day, depressing box-office sales.
Johansson, the star of the superhero film, had agreed a deal to get paid largely based on box-office sales, and her contract promised Black Widow would be a “wide theatrical release”, according to the lawsuit filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
By breaking the “theatrical window” — previously a three-month period of time between a film’s release in cinemas and at home — talent contracts that hinged on theatrical revenue were thrown into flux.
Johansson projects that the decision to release Black Widow on Disney Plus cost her $50m, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The company said it had “fully complied” with the Johansson’s contract and that its release strategy “has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20m she has received to date.”
Scarlett Johansson has sued Disney, accusing the Marvel owner of breaching her contract by releasing the Black Widow film in cinemas and on its streaming service on the same day, depressing box-office sales.
sued ... accusing ... of breaching her contract:依据是合同,可核查;by releasing the film in cinemas and on its streaming service on the same day:行为写到具体到”同一天”这个细节,指控才不是形容词;depressing box-office sales:损害用 V-ing 挂在句尾,成为行为的直接结果,而不是另起一句空话。
Scarlett was unhappy with Disney because Disney did something wrong.
Scarlett Johansson has sued Disney, accusing the Marvel owner of breaching her contract by releasing the film in cinemas and online on the same day, depressing box-office sales.
[A] has sued / criticised [B], accusing [B] of [违反的行为] by [具体动作], [导致的结果].
Residents have taken the developer to court, accusing it of breaking its sales contract by cutting the green space promised in the plan, reducing the value of their flats.
“Both parties, as well as Disney, understood this meant that the [film] would initially be released exclusively in movie theatres, and that it would remain exclusively in movie theatres for a period of between approximately 90 and 120 days,” the lawsuit said.
Johansson interpreted the words “like our other pictures” to mean Black Widow would have a minimum 90 day theatrical window.
争议的关键词是 “wide theatrical release” 和 “like our other pictures”——都是含糊话。双方的对策是各自把它翻译成天数:approximately 90 and 120 days / a minimum 90 day theatrical window。
The film was supposed to be shown in cinemas first, so Disney broke the rule.
Her contract promised a “wide theatrical release”, by which both sides understood a window of between approximately 90 and 120 days before the film went online.
[文件/约定] promised [含糊的说法], by which both sides meant [天数/金额/比例].
The internship agreement promised “flexible working hours”, by which both sides understood at least three days a week in the office.
Johansson projects that the decision to release Black Widow on Disney Plus cost her $50m, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The company said its release strategy “has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20m she has received to date.”
Disney said the film made money for her, but she said she lost a lot.
She estimates the release cost her $50m. Disney said the strategy had significantly enhanced her ability to earn on top of the $20m already paid to her.
[A] estimates that [行为] cost [对象] $[N]. [B] said [行为] has “significantly enhanced” [对象]‘s ability to earn on top of the $[M] already paid.
Tenants estimate that the new service charge costs each household 3,000 yuan a year. The landlord said the fee has “significantly improved” security, on top of the 200,000 yuan already spent on repairs.
Disney said in a statement: “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The company said it had “fully complied” with the Johansson’s contract.
注意这两句的顺序:迪士尼第一句在骂人(no merit whatsoever / sad and distressing / callous disregard),第二句才回到标准(fully complied with the contract)。
There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing…
The company said it had fully complied with the contract, and that the new release strategy had actually increased her earnings.
模板
[主体] said it had “fully complied” with [依据], and that [可核查的结果].
The school said it had fully met the conditions of the agreement, and that the new timetable had been discussed with parents in writing.
- 我的指控落到具体行为了吗?(by releasing … on the same day)
- 有争议的词,我给出可测量的定义了吗?(a window of approximately 90 to 120 days)
