First… Then… Finally
The White House has sought to reinject issues of law and order into the US presidential campaign after a second night of protests and looting in parts of Philadelphia, which were sparked by the police killing of a black man.
Authorities asked for residents in several districts to remain indoors as they attempted to quell unrest sparked by the shooting of Walter Wallace Jr, a black man whose family said was suffering a mental health crisis.
Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, which has sought to portray the president as the defender of law and order amid a national reckoning over police violence, on Tuesday night blamed Democrats for the “rioting” in the city.
“The riots in Philadelphia are the most recent consequence of the liberal Democrats’ war against the police,” the White House said in a statement, adding that Mr Trump “stands proudly with law enforcement, and stands ready, upon request, to deploy any and all federal resources to end these riots”.
“There is no excuse whatsoever for the looting and the violence, none whatsoever,” Mr Biden said after voting in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday.
1. which were sparked by:用定语从句补因果
原文出处: “protests and looting in parts of Philadelphia, which were sparked by the police killing of a black man.”
Last week, there was a big fire. A worker was careless.
A factory blaze destroyed three workshops on Monday, which was sparked by an electrical fault in the basement.
2. as they attempted to quell:as 表”在……
Authorities asked for residents in several districts to remain indoors as they attempted to quell unrest.”
The government told people to stay home. At the same time, it tried to control the situation.
Officials urged residents to remain indoors as rescue teams raced to contain the flooding.
3. amid a national reckoning:amid +
原文出处: “which has sought to portray the president as the defender of law and order amid a national reckoning over police violence.”
为什么好: 学生写背景只会 In this situation 或 Nowadays。
Nowadays, people care more about health.
The government introduced the new food-label rules amid growing public concern over childhood obesity.
原文出处: “the White House said in a statement, adding that Mr Trump ‘stands proudly with law enforcement…’”
He said... He also said...。
The teacher said the exam is hard. She also said students should prepare early.
The headteacher praised the team’s effort, adding that the real test would come in the national finals.
He said… He also said…
5. There is no excuse whatsoever… none whatsoever:
There is no excuse whatsoever for the looting and the violence, none whatsoever.”
There is no reason for students to cheat. It is really bad.
There is no justification whatsoever for academic dishonesty — none whatsoever, whatever the pressure.
