Although

Since at least the time of Abraham Lincoln, US presidential inauguration speeches have contained appeals to unity. Rarely since then has unity been such a central or oft-repeated theme as it was of Joe Biden’s address on Wednesday — but rarely, too, has American democracy felt as fragile as today.

Speaking in the presence of massed security to guard the Capitol from violence but in the absence of massed crowds and of his own predecessor, Mr Biden called for a fresh start. Yet it was a call for return: to truth and decency, to the respect for liberty, institutions and rule of law…

As Mr Biden acknowledged, the burden of responsibility confronting him is weightier still: to soothe gaping social divisions, repair the American republic, and restore its moral reputation.

Though Democrats now control Congress, the behaviour of Republicans in opposition will be a vital determinant of Mr Biden’s success.

Only if Americans feel they are all living in the same reality can the country truly move forward.

Just as Mr Trump’s inaugural speech invoking “American carnage” set the tone for his presidency, so it should be hoped that Mr Biden’s appeal for an end to “uncivil war” will define his own.

1. Rarely since then…

Rarely since then has unity been such a central or oft-repeated theme as it was of Joe Biden’s address on Wednesday — but rarely, too, has American democracy felt as fragile as today.”

The situation is different now。

People used to trust the news, but now they do not trust it.

Rarely since then has public trust in media been so low — but rarely, too, has the need for reliable information been so urgent.

2. Yet it was a call for return:Yet

Mr Biden called for a fresh start. Yet it was a call for return: to truth and decency, to the respect for liberty, institutions and rule of law…”

Online learning is convenient. But it also has problems.

Online learning offers unprecedented convenience. Yet its true test lies elsewhere: in self-discipline, in time management, and in the ability to learn without supervision.

3. As Mr Biden acknowledged:As + 认知动词,引述性让步

As Mr Biden acknowledged, the burden of responsibility confronting him is weightier still.”

Some people think。 比 Some people think 更有说服力。

Some people think the exam is hard. I agree.

As the principal himself acknowledged, the new curriculum demands more of students than ever before.

💡 效果 As + 具体权威 + acknowledge,让步句自带可信度,比笼统的 Some people think 高一个层次。

4. Though Democrats now control Congress:Though

Though Democrats now control Congress, the behaviour of Republicans in opposition will be a vital determinant of Mr Biden’s success.”

Although we have a lot of resources, we still have problems.

Though the school has doubled its library budget, the reading habits of students remain the real bottleneck.

5. Only if… can…:倒装条件,收束全文

Only if Americans feel they are all living in the same reality can the country truly move forward.”

才”,放句首时主句必须倒装(can the country truly move forward)。

If we work hard, we will succeed。

If we solve the pollution problem, our city will be better.

Only if citizens, companies and the government act together can our city breathe freely again.

6. Just as… so…:类比衔接,句间建立呼应

Just as Mr Trump’s inaugural speech invoking ‘American carnage’ set the tone for his presidency, so it should be hoped that Mr Biden’s appeal for an end to ‘uncivil war’ will define his own.”

Just as A…, so B…

The new policy is very important. It will change our lives.

Just as the mobile internet reshaped how we shop and socialise, so remote learning is set to redefine the classroom.

💡 效果 Just as…so…

结尾能不能用 Only if…can… 或 Just as…so…
