但学生写”变化”只有三板斧:become、suddenly、more and more。

In his final weeks my mother, my sister and I marked each change. The mental transformation was mostly orderly. A sleepy lucidity gave way to episodes of incoherence and confusion. Vivid dreams, some upsetting, quieted gradually into repose.

By stages, brief conversations were reduced to his whispers of “thank you” and “I love you”, and then silence.

Dehydration took hold. His skin became waxy and his smell more pungent. His eyes sealed shut.

One night my father, in the grip of a dream, tried to rush out of bed, something he was not at all equipped to do safely.

But I think (granting that this conclusion is based on a sample size of one) that it made my loss less jarring. Death is hard to imagine or conceptualise. It violates emotional logic. It may help to watch it happen.

表达 1:give way to 让位于、渐渐变成

A sleepy lucidity gave way to episodes of incoherence and confusion.

中文解释:give way 本义是”后退、让路”,give way to 引申为”被……

He became confused。

As time went by, his sadness became hope.

As time went by, his deep sadness gradually gave way to quiet hope.

Her initial excitement soon gave way to disappointment when she saw the result.

By stages, brief conversations were reduced to his whispers of “thank you” and “I love you”, and then silence.

The relationship between them became worse gradually.

By stages, their friendship was reduced to polite nods, then to silence, and finally to open hostility.

By stages, the small startup grew into a company employing more than 2,000 people.

Dehydration took hold.

Fear began in the crowd and more and more people were afraid.

Panic took hold of the crowd as the fire spread to the second floor.

A dangerous habit can take hold before parents even notice it.

表达 4:in the grip of 在……

One night my father, in the grip of a dream, tried to rush out of bed.

中文解释:grip 是”紧握”,in the grip of 就是”被……

He was controlled by fear 又直又生硬;in the grip of 把控制者放前面,画面是”恐惧握着他不放”,文学感立刻出来。

He was controlled by anger and could not think clearly.

In the grip of anger, he slammed the door without a second thought.

The whole country was in the grip of a severe economic crisis.

It made my loss less jarring.

The change was very sudden and I felt uncomfortable.

The sudden silence in the classroom was jarring after hours of lively discussion.

The cheerful music sounded jarring against the sadness of the occasion.

这 5 个表达是一套”变化过程写作法”:用 give way to 写状态交接,用 by stages 写阶段推进,用 take hold 写力量蔓延,用 in the grip of 写人被力量支配,用 jarring 写变化带来的不协调感。
