Problem Context + Solution Preview
Five global airlines are to start offering passengers use of a digital health pass to certify they are Covid-free before travel, as the sector seeks to navigate its way out of a historic collapse in passenger demand.
Five airlines… start offering a digital health pass
- 背景问题后置:as the sector seeks to navigate… a historic collapse
[Solution doer + action + what] + as [problem context + motivation]
The airline industry has many problems because of the pandemic. So some companies decide to use a health pass.
Three major airlines are to launch a digital health pass system, as the travel industry seeks to recover from a year-long collapse in international passenger demand.
用 as 连接两个层次,比 because / so 更凝练。
United Airlines, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, Swiss International Air Lines and JetBlue will begin rolling out the so-called CommonPass to passengers on some flights from December.
[Specific actors] + [specific action + timeline] + [specific product/name]
Many companies will use this new system. It will be available next month.
Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates will begin rolling out the so-called TravelPass to passengers on selected routes from January, with plans to expand to all destinations by March.
The project, developed by non-profit group The Commons Project and backed by the World Economic Forum, uses a digital certificate downloaded to a mobile phone to show a passenger has tested negative for Covid-19. Users can then use the certificate as proof of a negative test if the country they are visiting requires one. The airlines are not making the CommonPass mandatory, but in time it will also be used to provide proof of vaccination.
- 谁开发:developed by… backed by…
- 怎么用:uses… to show…
- 什么条件下用:if the country requires one
- 不是什么(关键限定):not making it mandatory
[Developed by / backed by] → [How it works] → [Usage condition] → [What it is NOT]
The system can check if people are healthy. It is very useful.
The platform, developed by a leading health-tech startup and backed by the National Health Commission, uses a smartphone-based digital ID to verify a person’s vaccination status. Users can present the ID at venues that require proof. However, the system is not compulsory — citizens can still provide paper documents if they prefer.
Data as Evidence
On Tuesday Iata warned that global airlines faced combined losses of 118.5bn this year, deeper than the 84.3bn forecast in June, and 39bn next year. Passenger numbers are forecast to fall 60 per cent on last year to 1.3bn.
118.5bn loss this year
- 对比数据:deeper than 84.3bn forecast in June
39bn next year / 60% fall to 1.3bn
[Key data point] + [Comparative data] + [Supporting data / projection]
The situation is very serious. Many companies lose a lot of money.
A recent industry report warned that the manufacturing sector faced combined losses of ¥200bn this year, nearly double the ¥108bn recorded in the previous quarter. Exports are projected to fall by nearly 35 per cent compared to last year.
One side… However, other sides…
No major airline has said it will follow the Australian carrier’s lead, with easyJet and Ryanair both telling the Financial Times they do not expect to require vaccinations on their flights.
“Under the EU system of free movement, we believe quarantine restrictions will be removed in spring 2021 once effective vaccines become available to protect high-risk groups from Covid-19,” Ryanair said.
No major… has said it will follow
[Statement of divergence] + [Position A] vs [Position B] + [Direct quote supporting B]
Some people think it’s good, but some people think it’s bad.
No major tech company has followed Apple’s lead in removing the charger from the box, with Samsung and Xiaomi both telling industry media they do not expect to adopt a similar policy. “Consumers expect a complete product. Removing accessories would damage brand trust,” a Xiaomi spokesperson said.
| 技术原理式 | How + what it’s NOT | 说清边界,比吹捧更可信 |
| 观点分歧式 | No major… with… both…
