Robinhood knows the value of striking while the iron is hot. A day after the popular but controversial stock trading app agreed to pay 70m to settle regulatory allegations that it has misled customers, it dropped the paperwork for its long-awaited initial public offering.
Revenue more than tripled to 958m last year as stuck-at-home Americans passed their time stock trading. That explosive growth has continued in 2021. Revenue already topped 522m in the first quarter. A viral meme-stock and cryptocurrency trading boom helped the platform to more than double the number of funded accounts over the past 12 months to 18m.
But the filing also highlights just how vulnerable Robinhood’s business model is to regulatory scrutiny. For would-be investors, the biggest risk is the legal hits would keep on coming.
Any changes could deal a big blow to Robinhood’s business model. As it does not charge clients a fee on making stock trades, the company makes the bulk of its revenue from payment-for-order flows. These accounted for about 63 per cent of Robinhood’s first quarter revenue.
原文开头用了”striking while the iron is hot”(趁热打铁)这条俗语,紧接着用”A day after… it dropped…”
Robinhood filed for IPO. It was a popular stock trading app.
Strike while the iron is hot” — Robinhood knew this well. Just a day after settling a 70m regulatory dispute, it filed for its long-awaited IPO.
💡 效果 俗语开头的巧劲(hook)+ 时间对比(a day after)制造节奏感,比平铺直叙的”filed for IPO”有张力得多。
The company grew very fast. It made a lot of money. Many people used it.
Revenue more than tripled to 958m last year as stuck-at-home Americans passed their time stock trading. That explosive growth has continued into 2021, with first-quarter revenue topping 522m.
💡 效果 用具体数字(958m → 522m → 18m accounts)代替模糊的”a lot of”,用因果(as stuck-at-home Americans…)
核心公式: But/Yet/However + 总括句 + 风险具体化
“But the filing also highlights just how vulnerable Robinhood’s business model is to regulatory scrutiny” — 这句是整个段落的”转折锚点”。
But there are also problems. The government might change rules.
But the filing also highlights just how vulnerable Robinhood’s business model is to regulatory scrutiny. The biggest risk for would-be investors: legal hits that keep on coming.
💡 效果 用highlight + vulnerable + regulatory scrutiny三个词搭建论证框架,比”there are problems”精确10倍。
“Any changes could deal a big blow…”先给结论,然后”as it does not charge clients a fee…” 63 per cent of first quarter revenue”用数据证明这个风险的严重程度。
The new rules are bad for Robinhood. They make money from trading fees.
Any changes to payment-for-order-flow rules could deal a big blow to Robinhood’s business model. Since the company does not charge clients trading fees, it relies on payment-for-order flows — which accounted for about 63 per cent of its first-quarter revenue.
💡 效果 先说结论(a big blow),再解释机制(how the business works),最后用数据量化(63%)。
