The hospitals needed oxygen. The government tried to help. Many countries helped India. But some countries did nothing.——三句话用了三个 help 变体,动词毫无张力。
India is airlifting emergency oxygen tanks as it battles with a catastrophic second wave of Covid-19 infections… Chronic shortages of beds and oxygen have left hospitals in hotspots such as Delhi pleading publicly for relief, while patients die for want of treatment.
More than 20 patients died at one private hospital in Delhi, Jaipur Golden, after oxygen supplies ran low.
In cities around the country, officials have reimposed restrictions, hospitals have been unable to keep up with the arrival of sick patients and cremation and burial grounds have been overwhelmed by dead bodies.
Even as countries step in to help India’s public health response, others such as the UK and US have been roundly criticised for their inaction so far.
1️⃣ run low —
原文出处: “…after oxygen supplies ran low.”
为什么好: 学生写”物资不够”只会 not enough / run out of。 和 run out of 的区别:run out of 是”彻底用完”,run low 是”快要见底、情况正变得危急”——危机正在发生的紧迫感,正好用 run low 表达。
The hospital did not have enough oxygen.
As oxygen supplies ran low, doctors had to choose which patients could be saved.
Food supplies were running low in the flooded city, and rescue teams were racing against time.
原文出处: “…hospitals in hotspots such as Delhi pleading publicly for relief.”
plead for 是”恳求、乞求”,语气比 ask 重得多:plead for help(恳求帮助)、plead for mercy(求饶)、plead with sb to do(央求某人做某事)。
The hospitals asked for help from the government.
Overwhelmed hospitals pleaded publicly for more oxygen supplies.
Local officials pleaded with residents to evacuate before the typhoon made landfall.
3️⃣ keep up with — 跟上、应付不过来
原文出处: “…hospitals have been unable to keep up with the arrival of sick patients.”
keep up with 本是”跟上节奏”,用在危机语境里是”勉强应付不断涌入的需求”:unable to keep up with demand(跟不上需求)、struggle to keep up with(艰难应付)。
The hospitals could not handle so many sick people.
The city’s hospitals were unable to keep up with the arrival of sick patients.
Teachers in rural schools can barely keep up with the growing demand for online lessons.
Even as countries step in to help India’s public health response…”
为什么好: 学生写”外国来帮忙”只会 countries came to help / gave help。step in 是”(在局面失控时)介入”的动词短语:step in to help(出手相助)、step in to resolve the conflict(介入调解)。
Many countries came to help India.
As the crisis spiralled out of control, neighbouring countries stepped in to offer emergency supplies.
When the company faced bankruptcy, the government stepped in with a rescue package.
5️⃣ roundly criticised —
原文出处: “…others such as the UK and US have been roundly criticised for their inaction so far.”
The government was criticised by many people.
The authorities were roundly criticised for their slow response to the disaster.
💡 效果 roundly 这类”强度副词 + 动词”组合,是学生作文里最稀缺的升级方式:not just criticised, but roundly criticised。
The company was roundly criticised for concealing the safety risks of its products.
|---|---|---|
| 物资开始短缺 | not enough | run low |
| 受困方求助 | ask for help | plead for |
| 系统承受不住 | cannot handle | keep up with |
| 外部力量介入 | came to help | step in |
| 不作为遭批评 | was criticised | roundly criticised |
Hospitals needed oxygen. The government tried to help.,FT版是 Chronic shortages have left hospitals pleading publicly for relief, while hospitals have been unable to keep up with the arrival of sick patients——高下之分不在事实,而在动词是否在”动”。
❌ The city had a big flood. People did not have enough food and water. They asked for help. The rescue teams could not handle so many people. Many countries came to help. But the government was criticised because it did not act early.
试着把 not enough 换成 run low、asked for help 换成 pleaded for、could not handle 换成 unable to keep up with、came to help 换成 stepped in、was criticised 换成 roundly criticised,看看”问题段落”是不是立刻有了新闻报道的力度。
