Parents pay a lot of money for their children’s education. They think it is important. They prepare for a hard life. Sometimes there are bad results that they did not think of. Some parents feel they made their children sad. But maybe the old habit will become less and less.——观点都对,但评价词只有 important 和 bad,情绪词只有 sad,整段没有一个有画面、有判断力的表达。

The obvious question is this: does private education deliver value for money? Many families undoubtedly think it still does. But success is not guaranteed.
Beware of unintended consequences. Your children may find themselves in the company of much richer families, with children chauffeur-driven to school… It can be hard keeping up, and it can distort children’s expectations.
Until then many will be braced for the sacrifices they consider necessary to pay for good schooling.
But those who cannot afford what they enjoyed themselves should not feel they are letting their own children down.
We put all five of our children through private education. Would we do it again? I don’t think it would be affordable now, given the fee increases. It was a struggle then. We have no expectation that our grandchildren will attend private school. I am happy for this family tradition to wither.
1️⃣ deliver value for money —
The obvious question is this: does private education deliver value for money?”
为什么好: 学生写”值不值这个钱”,只会 it is good for the price 或 is it worth it——前者是中式搭配,后者太口语。value for money 是英语里评价”钱花得值不值”的固定说法:deliver value for money(提供物有所值的价值)、offer good value for money(性价比高)、get value for money(花钱花得值)。
Parents want to know if the school is good for the price.
Parents want to know whether private schooling delivers value for money.
At that price, the laptop offers excellent value for money.
原文出处: “…many will be braced for the sacrifices they consider necessary to pay for good schooling.”
为什么好: 学生写”准备面对困难”只会 prepare for the hard life。be braced for(也作 brace yourself for)暗示”知道冲击要来,绷紧身体去承受”——原是身体动作(brace 绷紧),用在心理上自带画面感:be braced for a backlash(准备迎接反弹)、be braced for criticism(准备挨批)、be braced for the worst(做最坏打算)。
Parents prepare for the hard life they must live.
Many families are braced for the sacrifices that good schooling demands.
The industry is braced for a wave of job cuts.
3️⃣ unintended consequences —
Beware of unintended consequences.”
为什么好: 学生写”会有大家没想到的坏结果”只会 there will be bad results that people did not think of——从句绕一圈。unintended consequences 是社会、政策、教育类写作的固定表达,专指”意图之外、意料之外”的结果:the unintended consequences of a policy(某项政策的意外后果)、have unintended consequences for(对……
The plan may bring bad results that people did not expect.
The plan may carry unintended consequences for poorer families.
Raising tuition fees had the unintended consequence of driving away talented students.
原文出处: “…those who cannot afford what they enjoyed themselves should not feel they are letting their own children down.”
为什么好: 学生表达内疚只会 made my parents sad 或 disappointed my parents。let sb down 更贴近英语里”辜负了别人对你的期待”那层意思,是口语与书面通用短语动词:let your parents down(让父母失望)、let the team down(拖累团队)、feel you are letting sb down(觉得自己辜负了某人)。
They think they disappointed their children.
They should not feel they are letting their own children down.
He trained every morning because he did not want to let his coach down.
5️⃣ wither —
I am happy for this family tradition to wither.”
The tradition becomes less and less in their family.
They are happy to let the family tradition wither.
Without new readers, the print magazine slowly withered.
|---|---|---|
| 评价钱花得值不值 | is it good for the price | deliver value for money |
| 准备承受代价 | prepare for the hard life | be braced for the sacrifices |
| 政策的意外副作用 | bad results people did not expect | unintended consequences |
| 觉得自己辜负了孩子 | disappointed their children | letting their children down |
| 传统慢慢消失 | becomes less and less | wither |
Parents spend a lot of money and think it is important. Sometimes there are bad results. Some parents feel sad.,FT版是 Parents must ask whether schooling delivers value for money, be braced for the sacrifices, and watch out for the unintended consequences — but those who cannot afford it should not feel they are letting their children down——高下之分不在观点对错,而在评价有没有尺度、情绪有没有落点。
顺带积累同篇里的另外几个高分表达:be not to be ignored(不容忽视:the state school option is not to be ignored)、opt to do sth(选择做:they opted to save money)、in the company of(与……为伴:find themselves in the company of richer families)、distort children’s expectations(扭曲孩子的期望)、indulge in negative behaviour(沉溺于消极行为)、it was a struggle(那是一段挣扎的日子)。
❌ Many parents pay a lot of money for extra classes. They think it is important. They prepare for a hard life. But classes sometimes have bad results that parents did not expect, because children compare themselves with richer classmates. Some parents feel they made their children sad. But maybe the old habit of extra classes will become less and less.
试着把 think it is important 换成 ask whether it delivers value for money、prepare for a hard life 换成 be braced for the sacrifices、bad results that parents did not expect 换成 unintended consequences、made their children sad 换成 let their children down、become less and less 换成 wither,看看整段是不是从”意见”变成了”分析”。
