很多同学写英语作文,遇到”数据变化”或”重大新闻宣布”时,只会用 very big / a lot of people / the price went up 这种初中级表达。

A Covid-19 vaccine being developed by Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech has been found to be more than 90 per cent effective, in a breakthrough that could make the shot available for use by the end of the year if drug authorities give it the green light.

[Subject] has been found to be [adj/prep], in a breakthrough that could [result]

Scientists found a new vaccine. It is very effective. It can help many people.

A new vaccine has been found to be more than 90 per cent effective, in a breakthrough that could protect millions of people by the end of the year.

💡 效果 has been found to beScientists found 更客观、更新闻化;in a breakthrough that could + 结果 这个同位语结构,用一个逗号就交代了突破的影响,比另起一句简洁得多。

A new study on climate change has been found to be highly alarming, in a breakthrough that could reshape global environmental policies.

Regular reading has been found to be effective in improving writing skills, in a breakthrough that could change how students prepare for exams.

Pfizer shares jumped almost 15 per cent in pre-market trading in New York, while those of Nasdaq-listed BioNTech rose 25 per cent.

British Airways parent IAG soared by a third in London, while Air France-KLM jumped 30 per cent in Paris and Ryanair climbed 16 per cent in Dublin.

[Entity A] [strong verb] by [X%], while [Entity B] [verb] by [Y%]

The price of Apple shares went up a lot. Samsung shares also went up.

Apple shares jumped nearly 8 per cent in after-hours trading, while Samsung shares climbed 3 per cent in Seoul.

💡 效果jumped / climbed 替代 went up a lot,数字精度(nearly 8 per cent)替代模糊描述,while 连接两个市场信息,一句话传递双倍信息量。

Sales of electric cars soared by 45 per cent in Europe last year, while traditional petrol car sales fell by 12 per cent.

The number of students studying abroad jumped by 20 per cent in 2025, while those choosing domestic universities climbed only 3 per cent.

The Pfizer results far exceed the US Food and Drug Administration’s criteria for approving a Covid-19 vaccine, which mandates an efficacy of at least 50 per cent in placebo-controlled trials.

[X] far exceed [Y]‘s standards for [Z], which mandates/requires [condition]

The results are much better than the standard. The standard says you need at least 50 per cent.

The test scores far exceed the university’s admission criteria, which requires a minimum of 85 per cent in English proficiency.

  • mandates 可替换为 stipulates / sets a threshold of

The company’s quarterly revenue far exceeded market expectations, which had predicted only modest growth of 5 per cent.

The student’s final project far surpassed the course requirements, which mandated at least 10,000 words of original research.

你不必背 jumped 还是 soared——真正拉开分数差距的,是 has been found to be...in a breakthrough that could...
