FT №28 — Trump’s last chance: blocking states from certifying election results(2020年11月)
As Donald Trump continues to dispute his election loss, the outgoing US president is approaching a series of deadlines that will further cement Joe Biden’s victory.
The lengthy timeline provides space for Mr Trump to cast further doubt on the clear verdict of the American people and to block the transition process to Mr Biden’s administration, even if he has little hope of overturning the result.
In Pennsylvania, where Mr Trump has mounted most of his lawsuits, the state has a November 23 deadline for counties to submit their final vote totals.
In Michigan, the results are certified by a four-person board that has two Democrats and two Republicans, raising the prospect of a deadlock.
In a portent of that possibility, the board of canvassers in Wayne County deadlocked on certifying the results on Tuesday afternoon following a 2-2 split.
The process is more idiosyncratic elsewhere, offering Mr Trump opportunities to throw a spanner in the gears.
1️⃣ cast doubt on — 公开质疑
The lengthy timeline provides space for Mr Trump to cast further doubt on the clear verdict of the American people.”
cast doubt on(往……
Some people doubt the safety of the new drug.
The leaked report cast doubt on the safety of the new drug.
The company’s delayed financial report cast doubt on its claims of rapid growth.
2️⃣ cement —
原文出处: “…a series of deadlines that will further cement Joe Biden’s victory.”
为什么好: 学生写”巩固”只会 make… stronger 或 make sure。
The win made their position stronger.
The election result cemented their position as the region’s leading party.
A string of strong results cemented her reputation as the school’s best debater.
3️⃣ mount —
In Pennsylvania, where Mr Trump has mounted most of his lawsuits…”
mount 是正式新闻语体里”发动一场行动”的标准动词:mount a lawsuit(发起诉讼)、mount a campaign(发起运动)、mount a challenge(发起挑战)、mount an attack(发动进攻)。
They started a campaign against the new policy.
Students mounted a campaign against the new policy, collecting thousands of signatures.
The union mounted a legal challenge to the company’s dismissal policy.
4️⃣ deadlock — 僵局
原文出处: “…raising the prospect of a deadlock.” / “…the board deadlocked on certifying the results following a 2-2 split.”
作名词是 a deadlock,作动词是 deadlock on something。
The two sides could not agree, so the meeting ended.
The talks ended in deadlock, with neither side willing to compromise.
The negotiation deadlocked over the issue of pay, delaying the deal for weeks.
5️⃣ overturn —
原文出处: “…even if he has little hope of overturning the result.”
The team wanted to change the referee’s decision.
The club appealed, hoping to overturn the referee’s decision.
The court overturned the previous ruling after new evidence emerged.
|---|---|---|
| doubt | cast doubt on | 公开质疑 |
| make… stronger | cement | 巩固、坐实 |
| change the result | overturn | 推翻结果 |
| stop | block | 阻挠 |
| mess things up | throw a spanner in the gears | 从中作梗 |
❌ Some people disagree with the new rule. They say it is not fair. They want to change the decision. The two sides cannot agree.
试着把 disagree 换成 cast doubt on、把 change the decision 换成 overturn the decision、把 cannot agree 换成 deadlock,看看冲突的力度差了多少。
