你写 something was popular,人家写 it took off like a dingo strapped to a rocket;你写 the country closed its border,人家写 it slammed its doors shut

① make as many ripples → have negligible impact on / make little impression on

In a typical year, Australia makes as many ripples in British public life as you would expect from a rich, war-free country of 25m people at the other end of the world, which is to say not many.

比 has little impact 高级一百倍。

This event did not have much influence on the public.

The announcement made barely a ripple in public discourse.

  • The news sent ripples through the financial industry.
  • A small tax change can have a ripple effect on the entire economy.

② slam its doors shut → seal off / close its borders / shut tight

slammed its doors shut so tightly in the pandemic that I have no clue when I will see it again.

slam the door shut = “砰地关上门”,比 closed the border 多了一层”粗暴、彻底、不留给余地”的意思。

The country closed its borders to foreigners.

The country slammed its doors shut on international travellers.

③ a dribble of → a trickle of / a mere handful of

After closing the borders in March, it has allowed just a dribble of flights from abroad to land each week.

dribble = “一滴一滴地流”。用 a dribble of 来形容航班数量,暗示”少得可怜”——不是零,但几乎等于零。同义的 a trickle of 更常见。

Only a few people attended the meeting.

A mere trickle of people showed up to the event.

💡 效果 trickle(涓涓细流)和 dribble(点滴)都是水流类比喻,用在数量少、远低于预期的语境中。它们的反义词是 a flood of(洪流般的)、a deluge of(倾泻般的)。

④ strand → leave stranded / maroon

stranding so many Australians around the world for so long it has prompted questions from human rights officials.

strand = 使滞留、使困住(原义是船搁浅在沙滩上)。这个词的画面感极强——一个人被”搁浅”在异国他乡,进退两难。比 leave someone stuck 庄重且诗意。

Many tourists were stuck at the airport because of the storm.

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at the airport after the flight cancellations.

⑤ a blizzard of → an avalanche of / a barrage of / a flurry of

When case numbers jumped to triple figures in Victoria’s capital of Melbourne in July, ministers imposed a blizzard of curfews, stay-home orders and travel bans…

blizzard(暴风雪)。 同类别的好用法还有 an avalanche of(雪崩般的)、a barrage of(排炮般的)。

The government introduced many new rules.

The government issued a blizzard of new regulations.

💡 效果 blizzarda series of / a lot of 多了一层”来势汹汹、难以承受”的意味。

  • The company faced a barrage of criticism from consumers.
  • She received a flurry of messages after the announcement.

  • ripple(涟漪)
  • dribble/trickle(水滴)
  • flood/deluge(洪水)
  • blizzard(暴风雪)
  • avalanche(雪崩)

下次写 many 的时候,先停下来想一想:能用 a flood of 吗?能用 an avalanche of 吗?
