We will fly again? Probably not as much as we did. But we will have our fond memories, even if they are not of the food.
I miss trundling my wheelie bag along the glass walkway from the lift into departures at Heathrow Terminal 5, accompanied by the light exhilaration — which never goes away — of heading somewhere else for a bit.
She also misses the solitude that allowed her to plough through her work.
She does not miss the breakfasts on overnight flights, a dispiriting meal served in the dismal hours before landing.
Above all, I miss flying’s sense of liminality, of being between places. Flying alone — which, as a business traveller, I often did — is a pleasingly anonymous affair.
1️⃣ fond memories —
But we will have our fond memories, even if they are not of the food.”
We will have good memories of our school days.
We will always carry fond memories of our school days, even the small, ordinary ones.
Looking back on my childhood, I hold fond memories of the summers spent at my grandmother’s house.
2️⃣ light exhilaration —
原文出处: “…accompanied by the light exhilaration — which never goes away — of heading somewhere else.”
I was excited about the trip.
I set off for the airport with the light exhilaration of heading somewhere new.
There was a light exhilaration in the classroom as the students prepared for their first exchange trip.
She also misses the solitude that allowed her to plough through her work.”
为什么好: 学生写”努力做工作”只会 work hard 或 try to finish。
On the plane, she could work hard on her emails.
The long flight gave her the solitude to plough through dozens of unanswered emails.
During the winter break, I managed to plough through all the books on my reading list.
4️⃣ dispiriting —
She does not miss the breakfasts on overnight flights, a dispiriting meal served in the dismal hours before landing.”
The food on the plane was depressing.
The overnight flight was served a dispiriting meal in the dismal hours before landing.
Failing the exam twice was a dispiriting experience, but she refused to give up.
5️⃣ liminality —
Above all, I miss flying’s sense of liminality, of being between places.”
Flying made me feel like I was in between two places.
What I miss most about travelling is the sense of liminality — the feeling of being between places, belonging to neither.
The first year of university is a time of liminality, when students are no longer children but not yet adults.
|---|---|---|
| good memories | fond memories | 珍爱感 |
| work hard | plough through | 埋头推进 |
❌ I miss my school days. I was happy when I was with my friends. We studied hard together. Now I am a little sad when I think about it.
