She was afraid. She wanted to run away. The government was very bad.——情绪全靠 afraid 和 very bad 两个词扛,既写不出”她怕到什么程度”,也写不出”环境有多可怕”。

A Belarusian sprinter at the Tokyo Olympics has taken refuge in Poland’s embassy in Japan after alleging she had been taken to the airport against her will having criticised her country’s coaches.

Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus’s brutal leader, has been roundly criticised after he fraudulently claimed victory in last year’s presidential election and embarked on a campaign to suppress protesters and supporters of his rival.

“…due to the extremely heavy-handed response to her statements which have included vicious attacks on her reputation by Belarusian state media and then the attempt to force her to fly home from Tokyo…”

The incident “reflects Lukashenko’s paranoia about anything or anyone that could be seen as critical of his beleaguered regime”, she added.

1️⃣ take refuge (in) — 避难、寻求庇护

A Belarusian sprinter at the Tokyo Olympics has taken refuge in Poland’s embassy in Japan…”

take refuge in 是”在某处避难”的正式表达:take refuge in the embassy(在大使馆避难)、seek refuge(寻求庇护)、a refuge(避难所)。

She ran to the embassy because it was safe there.

Fearing arrest at home, the athlete took refuge in a foreign embassy.

Thousands of civilians took refuge in the school as the conflict spread to their town.

2️⃣ against one’s will — 违背意愿地、被迫

原文出处: “…after alleging she had been taken to the airport against her will having criticised her country’s coaches.”

against one’s will 是”违背某人意愿”的固定表达:be taken against one’s will(被强制带走)、be forced to do sth against one’s will(被迫做不想做的事)。

She did not want to go to the airport, but they took her there.

She claimed she had been taken to the airport against her will.

No one should be forced to leave their home against their will.

3️⃣ heavy-handed —

原文出处: “…due to the extremely heavy-handed response to her statements…”

The government’s response was very rude and too strong.

The authorities’ heavy-handed response only fuelled public anger.

The school’s heavy-handed rules against mobile phones sparked complaints from parents.

4️⃣ vicious —

原文出处: “…which have included vicious attacks on her reputation by Belarusian state media…”

vicious 是”恶毒、凶狠”的书面词:vicious attacks(恶毒攻击)、a vicious circle(恶性循环)、vicious rumours(恶毒谣言)。

The media made very bad attacks on her.

She faced vicious attacks on her reputation from the state media.

The young singer withdrew from social media after vicious online attacks.

5️⃣ paranoia —

The incident ‘reflects Lukashenko’s paranoia about anything or anyone that could be seen as critical of his beleaguered regime’…”

为什么好: 学生想表达”统治者/大人疑神疑鬼、听不得批评”时,往往绕一大圈:the leader always thinks people are against him。 的偏执多疑)、paranoid(形容词,多疑的)。

The leader always thought everyone was against him.

His paranoia about criticism made him see enemies everywhere.

Constant surveillance at work created a culture of paranoia among employees.

ran to a safe placetake refuge in人物的行动
did not want toagainst one’s will人物的无力
very rude / too strongheavy-handed环境的压迫
very bad attacksvicious attacks环境的恶意
always thinks people are against himparanoia环境的病态

She was afraid. She wanted to run away. The government was very bad.,FT版是 The athlete took refuge in Poland’s embassy after being taken to the airport against her will, as the regime launched vicious attacks on her reputation——高下之分不在情节,而在处境与压迫的层次。

顺带积累同篇里的另外几个高分表达:brutal leader(残暴的领导人)、embarked on a campaign to suppress protesters(发起镇压抗议者的运动,suppress = 镇压)、beleaguered regime(四面楚歌的政权)、fraudulently claimed(欺骗性地宣称)——写强权、压迫、舆论战的话题都能直接借用。

❌ The young reporter was afraid. She did not want to leave her country. But the government was very bad and media wrote very bad articles about her. She ran to another country to be safe.

试着把 was afraid 换成 feared for her safety、did not want to leave 换成 was forced to leave against her will、very bad government 换成 heavy-handed authorities、very bad articles 换成 vicious attacks、ran to another country 换成 took refuge abroad,看看人物的”处境感”是不是立刻出来了。
