Haiti has declared a state of emergency after the assassination of its president Jovenel Moïse, who was shot dead during the night in his private home on the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince.

“At around 1am … a group of unidentified individuals, some of whom were speaking Spanish, have attacked the president of the republic’s private residence and mortally wounded the head of state,” interim prime minister Claude Joseph said in a statement.

Joseph appealed to the Caribbean nation’s 11m population for calm and condemned what he called an “odious, inhuman and barbaric act”, in which Moïse’s wife Martine was also seriously wounded.

The government later added in a statement: “Although details are still emerging, at this time it can be confirmed that this was a well-co-ordinated attack by a highly trained and heavily armed group”.

1:declare a state of emergency → 不仅仅是在说”有状况”

Haiti has declared a state of emergency after the assassination…

中文解释: declare a state of emergency(宣布进入紧急状态)——这是新闻写作中的标准固定搭配,比 student 们爱用的 something bad happened 强太多了。

It was very seriousThere was a big problem。

The situation was very serious, so the government said it was a big problem.

The government declared a state of emergency after the assassination of the president.

The local government declared a state of emergency as the floodwaters continued to rise.

原文出处: who was shot dead during the night… / …and mortally wounded the head of state

The president was killed by some people. He died at his home.

The president was shot dead in his private residence by a group of unidentified attackers.

Three civilians were shot dead during the protest, and several others were mortally wounded.

原文出处: a well-co-ordinated attack by a highly trained and heavily armed group

中文解释: 三个形容词 well-co-ordinated(精心协调的)、highly trained(训练有素的)、heavily armed(全副武装的)叠加在一起,勾勒出一个清晰的画面。

There were some bad people who attacked the president. They were dangerous.

The attackers were a well-co-ordinated, highly trained, and heavily armed group.

The rescue team was well-equipped and highly trained, allowing them to operate in the most dangerous conditions.

4:condemned… as “odious, inhuman and barbaric” → 三词递进式谴责

Joseph … condemned what he called an “odious, inhuman and barbaric act”

中文解释: 三个词从轻到重递进:odious(令人憎恶的)→ inhuman(不人道的)→ barbaric(野蛮残暴的)。

为什么好: 同学们表达”谴责”只有 sb said it was very bad。

The prime minister said this was a very bad thing and people should be calm.

The interim prime minister condemned the attack as an odious, inhuman and barbaric act, and appealed for calm.

💡 效果 condemned...as 是比 said...was bad 高端至少两个档次的表达。

The international community condemned the cyber attack as a destructive, reckless and unjustified act.

Although details are still emerging, at this time it can be confirmed…

中文解释: details are still emerging(细节正在渐渐浮出水面)——不是简单的 we don't know yet,而是暗示信息是动态的、逐步显现的

为什么好: 同学们在作文里想说”还不知道/还不确定”时,翻来覆去只有 we don't know yet / it's not clear。

We don't know what happened yet. The police are still looking for information.

Details of the incident are still emerging, but authorities have confirmed that three suspects are in custody.

As details of the reform plan emerged, more investors expressed support for the new policy.
