Definition + Context + Significance
Recount (noun) the act of tallying voter ballots — again.
Many US elections have been subject to recounts, permitted (depending on the state) when a candidate’s margin of victory is narrow — usually less than 1 per cent. But no presidential election in modern memory has been subjected to as many challenges as 2020’s between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
- 一般背景:什么情况下允许recount(narrow margin)
Key Term + Definition → General Rule → Exception/Significance
A recount means counting votes again. It happens when an election is close. The 2020 election had many recounts.
Recount — the act of tallying voter ballots again. Recounts are permitted when a candidate’s margin is narrow, usually less than 1 per cent. But no presidential election in modern memory has faced as many challenges as the 2020 race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
Action Taken → Result Achieved → Implication
Mr Trump’s legal team twice demanded recounts in the state of Georgia. Neither process changed the result, which delivered a slim victory to Mr Biden. They also triggered recounts in two Wisconsin counties, which resulted in slightly larger totals for Mr Biden.
Twice demanded recounts in Georgia
Neither changed the result
Wisconsin recounts → larger totals for Biden
Specific Action → Neutral Result → Unexpected Outcome
Trump asked for a recount in Georgia. It didn’t work. Then there were recounts in Wisconsin. Biden got more votes.
Mr Trump’s legal team twice demanded recounts in Georgia — neither changed the result. In Wisconsin, recounts in two counties actually delivered slightly larger totals for Mr Biden.
Concede + Contrast + Rebuttal
Though unusual, these recounts were within the rules. Mr Trump’s supporters broke all precedent, however, by petitioning the US Supreme Court to overturn the results in four swing states that tipped the race against him.
Though unusual… within the rules(承认合理)
Though + [admit limitation], [contrast marker] + [stronger action]
The recounts were legal. But Trump supporters did something more extreme. They asked the Supreme Court to help.
Though unusual, the recounts were within the rules. Mr Trump’s supporters, however, broke all precedent by petitioning the Supreme Court to overturn the results in four swing states.
破折号或逗号隔开的同位语(Mr Trump’s supporters, however,)比”but”更正式。
One Action → Compound Reaction → Outcome
In addition, Mr Trump’s team filed 60 lawsuits in swing states that sought to throw out absentee ballots or other kinds of postal vote, or find other ways to alter the outcome.
- 目的一:throw out absentee ballots
- 目的二:find other ways to alter the outcome
- 衔接词:In addition(承接上一段)
[Transition] + [Core Action: number + object] + [Purpose 1] or [Purpose 2], or [Purpose 3]
Trump’s team filed many lawsuits. They wanted to change the election. They also wanted to throw away some votes.
In addition, Mr Trump’s team filed 60 lawsuits in swing states — seeking to throw out absentee ballots, invalidate postal votes, or find any other way to alter the outcome.
Summary Judgment + Warning Preview
The net result of 2020’s legal shenanigans is that the US constitutional guardrails did their job. The system worked. But Mr Trump’s onslaught of demands could set a precedent for future elections, in spite of the fact that 2020 produced no significant evidence of fraud.
The fear is that what was once unthinkable — that a presidential candidate would refuse to accept an election outcome — will now be seen as possible.
But… could set a precedent
- 升华:what was once unthinkable… will now be seen as possible
Short Verdict + [But] Future Risk + Open-Ended Thought
In conclusion, the system worked well. But there might be problems in the future because of what Trump did.
The system worked. But Mr Trump’s onslaught could set a dangerous precedent — what was once unthinkable will now be seen as possible.
