He is a good man, but he has some problems. I think he is a great person.

English:

Stanley Johnson emerges as the true villain of this story, though few will fail to note that his son has inherited some (though mercifully not all) of his less loveable traits.

That some delighted in his mistakes, is unarguable, but this analysis goes beyond the benefit of the doubt.

Political opponents are derided in a series of low swipes, which Bower rarely bothers to justify.

It is, it seems, everyone else’s job to make up for the PM’s unwillingness to dirty his hands with detail.

Bower is merciless on Johnson’s failures to address the shortcomings of the Metropolitan Police and on his over-reliance on others.

Brexit has led most people to a firm position on Johnson, but this is an attempt to offer a nuanced account — supportive but critical — of a man Bower calls an “intelligent patriot”.

1. emerge as the true villain of this story ——

Stanley Johnson emerges as the true villain of this story, though few will fail to note that his son has inherited some (though mercifully not all) of his less loveable traits.”

I think his father should be blamed——句子以”我”为主体,观点就显得主观。

I think his father is the person who should be blamed.

The father emerges as the true villain of this story, though the son has inherited some of his less loveable traits.

2. go beyond the benefit of the doubt ——

That some delighted in his mistakes, is unarguable, but this analysis goes beyond the benefit of the doubt.”

The writer is too unfair、The criticism is too much,全是情绪。 (That some delighted in his mistakes, is unarguable, but…)。

The writer is too unfair to him and says too many bad things.

Some of the criticism is fair, but the analysis goes beyond the benefit of the doubt.

3. be derided in a series of low swipes / take potshots at sb ——

Political opponents are derided in a series of low swipes, which Bower rarely bothers to justify.”

He criticizes his opponents a lot and says many bad things about them.

Opponents are derided in a series of low swipes, which the writer rarely bothers to justify.

4. dirty one’s hands with detail ——

It is, it seems, everyone else’s job to make up for the PM’s unwillingness to dirty his hands with detail.”

He does not want to deal with small things——语法没问题,但没有态度。 It is everyone else’s job to make up for…

He does not want to deal with small things, so other people have to do them.

Everyone else has to make up for his unwillingness to dirty his hands with detail.

5. be merciless on sb’s failures ——

Bower is merciless on Johnson’s failures to address the shortcomings of the Metropolitan Police and on his over-reliance on others.”

The writer strongly criticizes him for many things.

The biographer is merciless on his failures to address the problems of the police and on his over-reliance on others.

这5个表达连起来就是一条**“指认责任—拿捏分寸—描写行为—给出公道”**的路径:先用 emerge as the true villain of this story 定案(谁是真正的责任方),用 be derided in low swipes / take potshots at 说明批评的手法,用 dirty one’s hands with detail 写具体行为,用 be merciless on 说明批评的力度,最后用 go beyond the benefit of the doubt 或 offer a nuanced account — supportive but critical 收回分寸。

The father emerges as the true villain of this story, though the son has inherited some of his less loveable traits. Others are derided in a series of low swipes that the book rarely bothers to justify, and some parts go beyond the benefit of the doubt. Yet the better chapters are merciless on real failures, and the result is a nuanced account — supportive but critical.

Whether this is A or B rather depends on your starting point.(这到底是务实还是流氓,取决于你的出发点——把判断交回给读者,比硬下结论老练得多。)以及 The arc of this story is of a brilliant child trapped inside a prime minister.(故事的弧线是一个被困在首相外壳里的聪明孩子——用 arc 一词概括一个人的一生走向。)

学生写得干瘪,是因为只敢说 He is good / bad;学生写得过分,是因为不懂 benefit of the doubt。
