He is generous, selfless and devoted。

Mario Draghi has waived his €115,000 salary as Italy’s prime minister as he attempts to lead his country out of a health and economic crisis.

The decision to sacrifice his prime ministerial salary is intended to strike a chord in a country where the high salaries and perks of lawmakers have been frequently attacked by populist parties as a symbol of an out of touch political elite.

His most recent income tax return, published on Wednesday as part of the government’s transparency policies, revealed he earned €583,665 in 2019. His assets include 10 properties, nine of which are in Italy and one in London.

Previous Italian prime ministers who did not receive a salary did so because they were also lawmakers, unlike Draghi, which blocked them from being paid for both roles. Mario Monti, a former European Commissioner who led a technocratic Italian government between 2011 and 2013, also chose to give up his salary when he was appointed a life senator.

In 2020, Italians voted 69.6 per cent in favour of a referendum to reduce the number of MPs in parliament from 630 to 400, and the number of senators from 315 to 200.

(The decision to [X] is intended to [Y] in a country where [Z])

The decision to sacrifice his prime ministerial salary is intended to strike a chord in a country where the high salaries and perks of lawmakers have been frequently attacked…

He gave up his high salary. He wanted to help poor people.

The decision to donate his bonus is intended to strike a chord in a country where executives’ pay has become a symbol of a disconnected elite.

手法二:数字反差法(gave up €115,000… yet he earned €583,665)

waived his €115,000 salary… he earned €583,665 in 2019. His assets include 10 properties… Draghi earned an annual salary of €401,400 as president of the European Central Bank.

He does not care about money. He is very selfless.

He gave up a salary most Italians could only dream of, even though his own income and savings meant he had nothing to gain from the gesture — and everything to lose.

(Previous PMs… unlike Draghi… Monti also chose…)

Previous Italian prime ministers who did not receive a salary did so because they were also lawmakers, unlike Draghi… Mario Monti… also chose to give up his salary

Many leaders in history also gave up money.

Previous leaders who declined a salary often did so because the rules forbade double pay; unlike them, our principal gave up an income he was fully entitled to. Others have made similar gestures, but few have made them at such personal cost.

In 2020, Italians voted 69.6 per cent in favour of a referendum to reduce the number of MPs…

“the age of privilege is over”

People like him because he is a good leader.

His gesture resonates with a public that has already voted overwhelmingly to cut the perks of its own politicians: in last year’s referendum, nearly seven in ten said the age of privilege should end.

  1. 用 The decision to [行为] is intended to [目的] in a place where [背景] 点破意图;
  2. 摆出数字反差:他放弃了什么 vs 他本来拥有什么;
  3. 用 also(先例)+ unlike(差异)各写一句,把行为放进传统又突出独特性;
