“The restaurant is very small. This makes the experience more intimate. The chefs can see every guest’s face.”

  1. which 指代整句话:评价前文时,不是另起一句 “This is…”, 而是用 ”, which is…”
  2. 介词 + which 前置:with which / for which / in which 这种结构,学生要么不用,要么把介词丢在从句末尾。

The room is definitely not as loud as it used to be, which many would argue is a good thing, but it has a lovely energy.

What struck me more was the ease with which they glided around one another.

Last came tarte tatin in a miso-caramel sauce, for which the Pink Lady had been cut into a long strip, fashioned into a rose bud and swaddled in pastry.

The food may be impeccable, but for a restaurant that thrives off hustle and bustle and the energy of dining in close quarters that is inevitably a buzzkill.

技巧一:which 指代整句——“This is…” 合并成 ”, which is…”

The room is definitely not as loud as it used to be, which many would argue is a good thing, but it has a lovely energy.”

这里的 which 不是修饰 room,而是指代前面整句话:“the room is not as loud as it used to be”。

The room is not as loud as before. This is a good thing in many people’s opinion. But it has a lovely energy.

The room is not as loud as it used to be, which many would argue is a good thing, but it has a lovely energy.

This is a good thing.

The old street is no longer crowded, which some would argue is a loss, but it has become safer and cleaner.

技巧二:介词 + which 前置——with which / for which

What struck me more was the ease with which they glided around one another.” / “Last came tarte tatin in a miso-caramel sauce, for which the Pink Lady had been cut into a long strip.”

学生通常把介词留在从句末尾(the ease that they glided with),而 FT 把 with 提到 which 前:the ease with which。同一个道理还有 for which、in which、by which。

I was impressed by the ease that the chefs moved with. The apple tart was the last dish, and the cook had cut the apple for it.

I was impressed by the ease with which the chefs moved around one another. Last came the apple tart, for which the apple had been cut into a long strip.

The speed with which the city rebuilt itself amazed every visitor. The report explained the reasons for which the policy had failed.

原文: “for a restaurant that thrives off hustle and bustle and the energy of dining in close quarters that is inevitably a buzzkill”

中间隔了 “and the energy of dining in close quarters”,读者必须回头找先行词——这正是限定性 that 的”接力”:从句再长,也要贴着自己的名词。

The restaurant depends on the energy of the crowd, which makes people feel disappointed, which is a problem for a restaurant which needs a lively atmosphere.

(三个 which 连发,第二个 which 到底指 crowd 还是 makes people feel disappointed?

For a restaurant that thrives off hustle and bustle and the energy of dining in close quarters, that is inevitably a buzzkill.

A library that depends on quiet study and the atmosphere of a reading room that is easily disturbed will struggle to adapt.

  1. 合并练习: 找出你作文里 3 句以 “This is good/bad/important” 开头的评价句,改成 ”, which is/was …”
  2. 介词前置练习:the speed with whichthe reasons for which 各写一句,主题自选(学习、运动、城市变化都可以)。
