The decision shocked the French elite and divided public opinion — some saw it as a long overdue move to help fix an unequal society while others decried it as a cynical gesture pandering to populists.
Macron first promised to abolish Ena, which has produced four of France’s seven presidents since 1958 and is his own alma mater, in 2019 in response to the anti-establishment gilets jaunes protests.
But in recent decades critics have called it a failed meritocracy given that students increasingly came from the upper classes — 70 per cent at the latest count, compared to about 45 per cent in the 1950s.
Whether the new approach proposed by Macron’s government will prove to be fairer is difficult to predict.
Nevertheless, in targeting Ena Macron is sending a political message.
结构一:对比观点——“some… while others…”
原文:
The decision shocked the French elite and divided public opinion — some saw it as a long overdue move to help fix an unequal society while others decried it as a cynical gesture pandering to populists.
Some [view A as X] while others [view A as Y]
注意文中 some saw it as... while others decried it as...
Some people thought it was good. Other people thought it was bad.
The proposed reform divided public opinion — some saw it as a necessary step toward greater equality while others denounced it as a populist gesture with little practical effect.
Some view the rise of remote work as a liberation from the daily commute, while others see it as a blurring of the boundary between work and personal life.
结构二:因果关系——“in response to”
原文:
Macron first promised to abolish Ena (…) in 2019 in response to the anti-establishment gilets jaunes protests.
[Action] in response to [cause/trigger]
Macron decided to close Ena. This was because of the yellow vest protests.
The president’s decision to close the elite school came in response to growing public anger over social inequality and lack of social mobility.
The government introduced a new tax on sugary drinks in response to the rising obesity rate among young people.
But in recent decades critics have called it a failed meritocracy given that students increasingly came from the upper classes.
[Conclusion], given that [evidence/fact]
People said the school was not fair. Because most students were from rich families.
Critics argued that the school had become a failed meritocracy, given that the proportion of students from privileged backgrounds had risen from 45% in the 1950s to 70% in recent years.
The current education system is not serving all students equally, given that students from low-income families are significantly less likely to attend top universities.
Whether… is difficult to predict”
原文:
Whether the new approach proposed by Macron’s government will prove to be fairer is difficult to predict.
Whether [question] is difficult to predict / remains to be seen / depends on [factor]
Whether... is difficult to predict
It is hard to know if the new plan will work.
Whether the new school will actually produce a more diverse generation of civil servants remains to be seen and will depend on how the entrance exams are redesigned.
Whether... remains to be seen 比 It is hard to know 更正式、更地道。
Whether the ban on single-use plastics will significantly reduce ocean pollution remains to be seen and will depend on how strictly it is enforced.
Nevertheless”
原文:
Nevertheless, in targeting Ena Macron is sending a political message.
Nevertheless, [reaffirm the main point]
But Macron still wanted to send a message.
Critics have questioned whether the reform will lead to real change. Nevertheless, the president’s decision to target one of France’s most prestigious institutions sends a powerful political signal about his commitment to reform.
Some argue that traditional exams are the fairest way to assess students. Nevertheless, an over-reliance on exam results can discourage creativity and critical thinking.
because。学会用in response to(动机原因)、given that(论据推理)、lead to / result in(结果导向),让你的因果关系表达层次更丰富。 -
Whether... remains to be seen
