The number of UK jobs increased in the three months to June by the most since the start of the pandemic as the reopening of the economy boosted demand for workers and created early signs of labour shortages.

Those in employment rose to 32.28m in the second quarter, up 95,000 from the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics said on Tuesday.

This was a greater increase than the 75,000 forecast by economists polled by Reuters and marked the strongest growth since the three months to February 2020, before the first Covid-19 restrictions were imposed. The rise in hiring pushed the headline unemployment rate down to 4.7 per cent.

“The world of work continues to rebound robustly from the effects of the pandemic,” said Jonathan Athow, ONS deputy national statistician for economic statistics.

The number of payroll employees shows that the improvement continued into July, with a 182,000 monthly rise to 28.9m, but still 200,000 below its pre-pandemic level. The figure suggests a limited impact of July’s spike in Covid-19 infections on the labour market recovery.

Athow noted that the number of people on payroll had grown by more than 500,000 in the past three months, regaining about four-fifths of the fall seen at the start of the pandemic.

With many workers returning from furlough as businesses reopened, the number of hours worked surpassed 1bn a week for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

Job vacancies rose 21 per cent above pre-pandemic levels and the median monthly pay increased 6.4 per cent in July compared with February 2020, suggesting rising labour shortages and growing inflationary pressure ahead of the end of the planned end of the furlough scheme in September.

结构公式: [指标] increased by the most since [时间起点], as [原因]

FT写法:

The number of UK jobs increased in the three months to June by the most since the start of the pandemic as the reopening of the economy boosted demand for workers.

注意 FT 没有写 “jobs increased a lot”,而是写 “increased by the most since the start of the pandemic”——用历史最高级(the most since…)

学生写图表作文最典型的毛病是开头绕圈子:“Nowadays, with the development of the economy, more and more people have jobs.”——三句废话之后才出现数字。

Nowadays, the economy is developing very fast. Many people can find jobs now. The number of people with jobs increased.

The number of students choosing to study abroad increased last year by the most since 2019, as travel restrictions were lifted and demand for international education recovered.

by the most since

结构公式: [指标] rose to [总数] in [时间], up [变化量] from [上一期], [来源] said

FT写法:

Those in employment rose to 32.28m in the second quarter, up 95,000 from the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics said on Tuesday.

The number of students going abroad was about 700,000. It increased 80,000. Many people went abroad.

The number of Chinese students studying abroad rose to 703,500 in 2023, up 80,000 from the previous year, the Ministry of Education said.

rose to X, up Y from Z

This was a greater increase than the [预测值] forecast by [机构] and marked the strongest growth since [基准期]

FT写法:

This was a greater increase than the 75,000 forecast by economists polled by Reuters and marked the strongest growth since the three months to February 2020.

The number of visitors increased. Many people came to the museum. It was a big number.

Weekend visitor numbers were a greater increase than the 8,000 forecast by local officials and marked the strongest turnout since the museum reopened in March.

a greater increase than the X forecast by

结构公式: [指标] continued to [改善], with a [增量] rise to [总数], but still [缺口] below [基准]

FT写法:

The number of payroll employees shows that the improvement continued into July, with a 182,000 monthly rise to 28.9m, but still 200,000 below its pre-pandemic level.

FT 用 with... but still...

The number of tourists continued to increase. It was a great success. The tourism industry recovered completely.

Visitor numbers continued to climb in July, with a 50,000 monthly rise to 1.2m, but still 300,000 below the level seen before the pandemic.

with a X rise to Y, but still Z below

结构公式: [指标A] rose X per cent above [基准] and [指标B] increased Y per cent, suggesting [推断]

FT写法:

Job vacancies rose 21 per cent above pre-pandemic levels and the median monthly pay increased 6.4 per cent in July compared with February 2020, suggesting rising labour shortages and growing inflationary pressure.

学生写数据结论最爱用 “This shows that the economy is good” 这种大而空的判断。

The number of jobs increased and salaries went up. This shows that the economy is developing very well.

Smartphone sales rose 18 per cent year on year and the average selling price increased 9 per cent in the same period, suggesting that consumers are trading up to premium models despite the economic slowdown.

A rose X% and B increased Y%, suggesting Z——两个具体数字 + 一个克制推断。

第一句给出最重要的总数 + 历史参照(by the most since / a record high / the strongest since)。
总数之外,有没有变化量(up X from)和来源(according to / said)?

The number of people using the city library increased a lot last year. There were 2.1m visits. It was more than the 1.8m predicted by officials and the highest number since 2018. But it was still below the level of ten years ago. The number of young readers also grew by 15 per cent, suggesting that reading is becoming popular again among students.
