Many crave liberation from “stuffocation”, and some find it through the catharsis of a Kondoesque clear-out or “Scandinavian death cleaning” — the apparently traditional Nordic decluttering undertaken at the arrival of old age.

Having recently put everything into boxes for the less terminal adventure of a house move, we decided to strictly limit how much came out of them at the other end. However, we knew that there is one kind of object that defiantly resists the cardboard coffin: books.

Everyone I talked to while writing this piece readily agreed that identity and ego were deeply tied up with their book collections. This was perhaps most understandable for Cassie Thompson, a stay-at-home mother with two university degrees.

The common complaint that one has too many books, rather like the confession that one has had too many lovers, is usually a boast in not very good disguise.

“Scandinavian death cleaning” — the apparently traditional Nordic decluttering undertaken at the arrival of old age.

My school has a “shadow day” program. Shadow day means students follow a professional for a day to learn about their job. This program is very popular.

Our school offers a “shadow day” program — a career exploration activity in which students follow a professional for an entire workday — and it has become one of the most popular initiatives on campus.

Cassie Thompson, a stay-at-home mother with two university degrees, says…

Cassie Thompson is a stay-at-home mother. She has two university degrees.”

Julian Baggini, an author and philosopher, wrote this piece.

Mr. Wang is my math teacher. He is 50 years old. He has been teaching for 25 years. He is very strict.

Mr. Wang, a veteran math teacher with 25 years of classroom experience, always insists on perfection — but that is precisely what makes him unforgettable.

结构公式: [主句话题],[rather like/just as/much like + 类比内容],[继续主句]

The common complaint that one has too many books, rather like the confession that one has had too many lovers, is usually a boast in not very good disguise.

rather like...

Some students say they didn’t study for the exam. But they actually studied very hard. They are just being modest.

The claim that one “never studied at all”, rather like the protestation that one is “terrible at this game” seconds before winning, is often a veil for hidden effort.

It is a kind of false modesty”生动得多。
