Doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford could be available for purchase in India as soon as March, according to one manufacturer, in the first sign that the sought-after jab will make its way on to the private market.
Pharmaceutical companies worldwide have already ramped up production of several experimental vaccines in anticipation of forthcoming regulatory approvals.
“If it’s in the private market it opens up an inequity issue, you’re letting people jump the queue,” said Anant Bhan, health researcher at Yenepoya University in southern India.
原文出处: “the sought-after jab will make its way on to the private market”
sought-after 字面义是”被追逐的”,形容东西抢手、人人想要——既可以形容商品(a sought-after product),也可以形容人才(a sought-after graduate)。
This university is very popular among students.
With only 500 places a year, the programme is one of the most sought-after in the country.
Data scientists are among the most sought-after professionals in today’s job market.
Pharmaceutical companies worldwide have already ramped up production of several experimental vaccines”
The company increased its production of masks.
The company ramped up production of medical supplies to meet surging demand.
The government ramped up investment in renewable energy after the crisis.
3. jump the queue — 插队
原文出处: “you’re letting people jump the queue”
Rich people can get the vaccine earlier than poor people.
Allowing the wealthy to buy vaccines privately lets them jump the queue ahead of the most vulnerable.
Some applicants tried to jump the queue by paying extra fees.
4. in anticipation of — 预计到、为……做准备
原文出处: “ramped up production of several experimental vaccines in anticipation of forthcoming regulatory approvals”
只会用 because they expect。
They built more houses because they expected more people to come.
The city expanded its metro network in anticipation of a surge in commuters.
Stores hired extra staff in anticipation of the holiday rush.
5. inequity —
原文出处: “it opens up an inequity issue”
This is unfair for poor people.
The policy deepens the inequity between the rich and the poor in access to healthcare.
Education inequity remains one of the biggest barriers to social mobility.
这5个表达的妙处在于:它们围绕一个话题自成体系——sought-after(抢手)→ ramp up(加大供给)→ in anticipation of(未雨绸缪)→ jump the queue(插队)→ inequity(不公)。
