But this, but that——读起来像小学生吵架,而不是一篇有逻辑深度的议论文。
真正的转折和让步,在英文写作中是一整套武器库:while、even after、just as…、in spite of、despite。
Donald Trump’s legal options to challenge his election loss are about to significantly narrow, with three battleground states carried by Joe Biden due to certify their results in the wake of a crushing weekend courtroom defeat for the Trump campaign.
The certifications will arrive just as steadfast Republican support for Mr Trump’s legal challenges has begun to crack.
But Mr Trump has shown little sign that he will ever admit defeat, even after a conservative judge in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening tossed out a Trump campaign election lawsuit.
Kevin Cramer … defended Mr Trump for merely “exercising his legal options” but said it was “past time to start a transition”.
技巧一:be about to + , with —— 即将发生 + 伴随说明
原文:
Trump’s legal options are about to significantly narrow, with three battleground states due to certify their results.
“be about to” 比 “will” 更有紧迫感,暗示”马上就要发生”。
Trump will lose his legal options. Three states will certify their votes.
Trump’s legal options are about to significantly narrow, with three battleground states due to certify their results.
💡 效果 “be about to” 比 “will” 更鲜活;”, with” 把两句话压缩成一句话,行文更紧凑。
China’s tourism industry is about to experience a major recovery, with millions of出境 travellers ready to book their first overseas trips.
The certifications will arrive just as steadfast Republican support for Mr Trump’s legal challenges has begun to crack.
比 “at the same time” 更精准、更有画面感。
The certifications are coming. At the same time, Republican support is weakening.
The certifications will arrive just as Republican support for Trump’s legal challenges has begun to crack.
The final exam results are about to be released, just as students have begun to worry about their university applications.
技巧三:But...even after...
But Mr Trump has shown little sign that he will ever admit defeat, even after a conservative judge tossed out a Trump campaign election lawsuit.
这里用了两层转折:第一层是 But(与前文形成大转折),第二层是 even after(在转折内部再加一层”让步”——按理说法官驳回了就应该认输,但他没有)。
Trump didn’t admit defeat. A judge dismissed his lawsuit.
But Mr Trump has shown little sign that he will ever admit defeat, even after a conservative judge tossed out his election lawsuit.
But the government has shown little sign that it will reverse the policy, even after thousands of protesters took to the streets.
Kevin Cramer defended Mr Trump … but said it was “past time to start a transition”.
Kevin Cramer defended Trump. However, he said it was time to start a transition.
Kevin Cramer defended Mr Trump for merely “exercising his legal options” but said it was “past time to start a transition”.
The professor praised the student’s creativity but noted that the argument lacked sufficient evidence.
|---|---|
be about to + , with | 背景铺垫,即将发生+伴随说明 |
But ... even after ...
