First / Then / Finally

First, we went to the park. Then we had lunch. After that, we took photos. Finally, we went home.

Lost appetite was his body’s first departure. From bites of solid food, to apple sauce with cream, to orange juice and Jack Daniel’s, to water. There was a big step when, even sitting up, he began choking on liquids. From then until he lost consciousness completely we spooned ice chips into his mouth.

His breathing slowed and then became irregular, stopping for three, five, 10 seconds before gasping back.

This was frightening at first. At the end, his chest stilled and only his stomach rose and fell. When he died, just before midnight, my sister was with him. She woke me and when I touched his hand it was already cool.

Once the countdown has begun, the board sometimes puts lamed leaders out of their misery sooner than planned.

As soon as I had made my farewell remarks, my guests swarmed over to my incoming colleague, marooning me at the bar with a rapidly warming glass of prosecco.

The soundest approach is to do the job you are paid to do to the best of your ability until the moment you step away from your desk.

When he died, just before midnight, my sister was with him.”;“She woke me and when I touched his hand it was already cool.”

My father died at midnight. My sister was with him.

The rain stopped. We went out. We saw a rainbow.

When the rain finally stopped, just before dusk, we stepped outside and found a rainbow hanging over the field.

💡 效果 ① when 从句在前,主句在后,时间与事件一次说清;② 精确时刻(just before dusk)作插入语,比单独写 It was dusk.

2. from then until:

From then until he lost consciousness completely we spooned ice chips into his mouth.”

We kept doing this for several days.

We did this for three days.

I was very nervous. I kept practising for two weeks. Then the competition started.

From then until the day of the competition, I practised the same eight sentences every morning — until my mouth moved faster than my mind.

同族替换:from that day on、between then and now、ever since。

3. and then … before + V-ing:

His breathing slowed and then became irregular, stopping for three, five, 10 seconds before gasping back.”

His breathing slowed. It became irregular. It stopped for 10 seconds. He gasped. FT 的写法是一个主语 + 一串动词,中间用 and then、before + V-ing 把顺序交代清楚。

The car stopped. The door opened. A man came out. He looked at me.

The car slowed and then stopped; the door opened and a man stepped out, pausing for a second before looking straight at me.

4. 同族补充:once / as soon as / until

原文出处: “Once the countdown has begun, the board sometimes puts lamed leaders out of their misery sooner than planned.”;“As soon as I had made my farewell remarks, my guests swarmed over to my incoming colleague…”;“…do the job you are paid to do to the best of your ability until the moment you step away from your desk.”

The teacher finished speaking. All the students stood up.

As soon as the teacher had finished speaking, every student stood up; once the applause started, nobody sat down again until the moment the bell rang.

💡 效果 as soon as + had done 让两件事紧贴;once 用一次就够,不要再加 and then;until the moment + 从句 比 until the bell rang 更有仪式感,适合写「坚持到最后」的结尾。

When he died, just before midnight, my sister was with him.
From then until he lost consciousness completely we spooned ice chips into his mouth.
紧接着and then / before + V-ing变化与细节His breathing slowed and then became irregular… before gasping back.
节点一过 / 刚一 / 一直到once / as soon as + had done / until the moment + 从句之后的结果Once the countdown has begun, the board sometimes puts lamed leaders out of their misery sooner than planned.

When the letter arrived, I was cooking dinner. → As soon as the letter had arrived, I dropped everything. → Once the letter had arrived, there was no going back. → I kept reading it again and again until the moment the sun came up.

Early in March、In his final weeks、The following year。
  • 时间从句是 when / once / until / as soon as 引导的句子。

Early in March he was absolutely himself and now he is gone.(时间锚 + 对比),到了写死亡那一刻,才换成 When he died, just before midnight…(时间从句 + 精确时刻)。

  1. 时间状语从句里不能用 will:When he will die ✗ → When he dies / When he died ✓。 I will call you when I arrive.
  2. not … until 是「直到……才」:He did not stop until the day he left.
  3. when 不等于 while:when 指着某一刻,while 指两件事同时进行。写「一边走一边想」用 while walking,写「雨停的那一刻」用 when the rain stopped。

Last Sunday I got up early. I made breakfast. My mother came into the kitchen. She gave me a letter. I read it. I cried.

要求:

  1. 至少用一个 when 从句(时间在前、事情在后);
  2. 用一次 from then until 或 until the moment 写出「一直持续」;
  3. 用一次 and then 或 before + V-ing 写前后紧接的动作;
